you will have remove the cd drive and remove all the cd rom drivers from your laptop. put the cd drive back into the laptop, wait until you see the found new hardware device and the message of looking for software to run the device and it will ask to connect to the internet to search for drivers, ( recommended ) message will appear. allow it to connect. this will conduct a search for the needed software and drivers for the brand of cd drive in the laptop. if a message should appear on the screen about no information for the device can be found you will need to remove the cd drive, get the brand, model number and serial number and do a search yourself to get the need drivers and software to download your self and download it. if this still doesn't work you made need to get another drive, you can get these on ebay at a cheap price, also you can even get a dvd drive that will work in your laptop. as long as you have an ebay account, it is free to join.

I had a similar problem I loaded Nero 7 from an external hard drive and the setup program detected that the drives Upper filter and Lower filter in the registry was in error. Who knows what that means. I clicked okay and Nero (NeroCheck.exe) fixed it in a jiffy. I got my drive back.
The connector for the External hard drive cost me $50 - "USB to SATA/IDE Adapter" The hard drive I used was an old 4gb drive I had in the cupboard. I just happen to have a few computers...so I could use the drive from one computer to load Nero Setup onto External drive then attached the External drive to faulty computer then ran setup.
You could use a memory flash stick if you have one, easier than what I did.
An afterthought - Maybe if Nero 7 or later is already loaded on the laptop, then run it. It might detect the fault.

It might not be a driver issue. Sounds like Hardware. Try to update the firmware first of all. If that doesn't help remove the drivers you have installed, remove the disc drive then plug it back in. Try to play a disc in it and if it plays try to reinstall the drivers.
Sounds like it isn't going to fix it but my fingers are crossed for you.
You may need a new slimline or an external disc drive
