Will legal gay marriage ruin your straight marriage?

I've heard one argument that allowing gay marriage will harm straight marriages - and I don't understand that. I'm married, and I don't know how two men (or two women) getting married could possibly effect the strong marriage I have.

I'm not looking to hear crazy rants - just real honest explanations why some straight people will feel "less married" or that their marriage will suffer if same-sex marriages are legalized.

Thanks.

Update:

"Woman", please explain to me how it will affect your child.

For those others who are just opposing gay marriage but not explaining - does that mean that although you are against same-sex marriage you don't believe it will harm your marriage?

I agree with you. I cannot see any logical explanation that gay marriage will ruin a straight marriage. If a straight marriage ends, that was the straight couple's fault and no one else's.

I will take the time to refute your questions: 01) Being gay is not a lifestyle, it is not a choice. It is something that is genetic. Why would 10% of the population choose to be descriminated against, hated, and dispised by people like you? 02) Gay marriage should be offered. In my experience Gays who share their lives together stay together longer the straight marriages. 03) This whole section is nothing but a bigotted statement. 04) Again you state untruths, yes straight marriage has been around a long time. Women are not still property, blacks can marry whites, and divorce is legal. 05) Straight marriage will be uneffected by Gay Marriage. Except if you are a closet gay and would divorce your mate and have a same sex marriage. 06) Straight marriages are not valid because they produce children. Children are not the only reason people get married. I know lots of straight couples who have been married for a long time who choose not to have children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children. There are 6,000,000,000 people in the world right now. There are more people alive at this moment then have died in all of history. I also resent the fact you mention infertile couples and old people as people who should not be married. I am infertile and so is my wife, we have been married for 37 years and plan on 113 more years together. Can you say that? What should I do, throw her out into the street? You should read what you wrote. Are your parents or grandparents still married? 07) Since Gays cannot have children obviously, straight parents will raise gay and straight children. 08) Gay marriage is not supported by religion. Are you sure in all religions? America is not a theocracy, it is a republic. The Constitution guarantees the right to believe or not to belief in any religion. The values of one religion should not be imposed on the entire country. That's why we don't have only one religion in America. 09) This statement is all bull. 50% of all marriages in America end in divorce. We have a ton of single parent households. 10) The foundation of society is based on an ever changing ideals. The Constitution was written over 225 years ago. There have been lots of amendments over those years to update the Constitution. What about the other things we live with now that were never mentioned in the Bible. Like automobiles, electricity, dishwashers, heaters, air conditioners, freedom, no slavery, a woman's right to vote and to run for office, aircraft, submarines, guns, movies, TV, and on and on. I feel that your rant is not informed with any sense of reality. You are truly the worst bigot I have seen on Yahoo Answers since I started answering questions. On top of all that, I have spent my whole life being accosted by God fearing Christians who feel that their way is the only way. Do not ever forget Christianity was based on Judaism. I am very proud to say I am a Jewish person, who has never once in his life tried to convert anyone.

The effect of a gay marriage on a straight marriage will not effect us, but our children.

The union of one sided 2 x's.

Two Dads, or two Moms, not a heterosexual marriage of one dad, one Mom.

Thus child will grow up to think this is OK?

So what becomes of the heterosexual relationship, within a gay marriage context for the children?

Question: How does another couple getting married have anything to do with YOUR marriage.

    Answer: It doesn't

People who are coming up with this propoganda that gay marriage will "ruin" other marriages is just a sore, pathetic excuse to try to keep gay marriage illegal and to keep a certain group of people down. Having a problem with gay marriage is the same thing as having a problem with black people, females, hispanics or any other group of people. It's the same thing as racism, and it's bullshit.

I cant see why it would hurt either...to me i believe everyone should be able to suffer equally. Its not those who are gay will marry straight people, they are gay and off the market. Maybe they think the will have kids and make them gay, like it in the up bring...Its not people are because the are, its no big deal and everyone need someone to love.

And im a straight female who has the title Reverend in front of her name, i would preside over same sex marriages as i would straight folks.

It doesn't detract from or cheapen my marriage one bit , unlike what conservatives say. As a lawyer, I'm glad that gay married couples can take advantage of the 100 or so civil and statutory rights straight married couples automatically get. I'm also glad that society can promote healthy, long-term relationships between gays, and stop portraying gays as bar-hopping, maladjusted people. Now gays can get equal justice under the law, at least as far as marriage and all it entails. My gay married friends seem happier and more relaxed than before.

It wouldn't effect my marriage directly, however, it would effect my children. You see, in my state, our legislature has deemed that all types of marriage must be promoted in the school system. And therefore, my children (starting in 1st grade) would get an early education on what being gay is... Frankly, I don't want our school to teach my kids about what my wife and I believe to be a mental disorder in the first place.

I want my children to learn about the values of marriage from our family and our church, not the looney libs in our school system.

What you heard is from people that are against gay marriage without sounding like they don't make sense and they don't have a good argument. Except egoism.

Gay marriage will not affect anybody and it will not make them go away. They were created by God and they are just like us.

This is a good question. I'm straight and married. I don't think gay marriages would have any affect on mine whatsoever! I don't understand why someone would even think that. I'm curious to see other answers.

It would affect my positively personally... I would be a much happier person if I knew gay people could get married... I'm straight and have a a gay sister in law.

Obviously people who say that's marriage is probably already on the rocks.
