timing belt on a 2000 Escort ZX2?

Question

I went to Auto Zone to have see why my check engine light came on. According to their diagnosis, one possibility is that my timing belt either jumped or has tensioner failure. When researching possible estimates, I saw that it can get as high as $600. Thing is it's going to take me MONTHS to come up with that kind of money. What is the absolute longest I can hold off on getting this fixed?

Until it leaves you stranded. Thats not a inerfernce motor so if it breks it won't hurt the internal parts of the engine. You real need to go to a real tech and have them diagnose the problem. Autozone  has no clue what there doing, and as a diagnostic tech it's a slap in the face to see these dumbass's trying to diagnose cars, Is this real what the industry has come to.

How bad does you engine run?  If the belt skipped a tooth you will have either lost low end power or high end power.  What trouble code did they find?
