What would a vegetarian like to eat at a barbecue?

My wife and I are moving to a new town. We have made some friends there and have gone out to eat with them a few times. We would like to have a barbecue and invite them over, but she's a vegetarian. Can someone help me with this? I know nothing of what I could barbecue for a vegetarian, and I'd really like to have her enjoy herself, too.

My girlfriends neighbor is veggetarian and loves grilling here are some things she eats at bbq's:

    *) Tofurkey "hotdogs"

*) grilled corn on the cob

*) she cuts up her veggies she likes (mushrooms, zucchini, peapods, potatos, etc), wraps them in tin foil, marinades them and sticks those on the grill.

*) Veggie burgers with avacado on them.

    *) grilled stuffed peppers! yummy!

If she is a vegetarian, but you are Not sure if she eats eggs or drinks milk be on the safe side and buy a pack of "Vegan" Burgers. Then no matter what she can eat them.

Most supermarkets in the frozen section next to the frozen pancakes sell "Morning Star Farms Vegan Burgers" or "Boca Original Burgers" are Vegan they come in a box. If you do not see them ask.

She can eat them the same as any other burger with ketchup/and or mustard, lettuce, pickle, tomato.

Perhaps instead of Pork and Beans buy Vegetarian beans. They are in the same section and also sold by Heinz, Bush's or Campbells makes them. I add a little ketchup to sweeten them and they taste really good. Corn on the cob is great. Salad is great. With that she would be happy. My last food suggestion at Barbeques I always put out salsa and chips to start which is always fun for everyone.

One last thing which May be very important. Do Not grill her burger on the grill with the meat. If she is like Most vegetarians I know she can not eat it. Put a piece of Aluminum foil down for hers and somewhat cover it. Remember Veggie type burgers only need a couple of minutes to cook. As soon as you see the slightest brown they are Done. Meat takes much longer to cook and you do not want to burn her burger. Someone suggested use a seperate fork to turn and pick up her burger and that is an excellent idea.

Please tell her you cooked it separetly and with it's own utensls. She will understand and it is not much to do to make a new friend very happy.

    Good luck

The best course of action is to ask her what she'd like to have. If she's actually vegan and you picked up veggie burgers with milk or eggs, she'll appreciate the sentiment, but probably won't eat it. It helps to have a lot sides at BBQs so everyone finds a few things that they like. The last time I had a BBQ I made:

    Boca Veggie burgers

    Lightlife Smart Dogs

    Morningstar Farms rib patties

    Baked beans

    Grilled corn on the cob

    Veggie kabobs

    Potato salad and chips

    Salad

Fresh raw veggie platter with hummus and a vinaigrette dip

    Fresh pineapple, strawberries and grapes

(edited to add a couple other things I remembered)

Also, you might want to ask her how she likes veggie burgers cooked if you plan on doing that. Most vegetarians I know prefer them cooked in an oven for taste and to avoid cross-contamination.

Veggie burgers are a good idea. There are also some good veggie hot dogs to try. How about some vegetables themselves? Corn does well on a grill. Or do shiskabobs for the group and just leave the meat off hers.

Good luck with the barbecue; hope you both have a great time!

You can buy vegetarian burgers or sausages if you're really pushed.

Corn on the cob is delicious barbecued.

Chop tofu into cubes and marinade in olive oil, a few dashes of soy sauce and a little tomato puree; put onto skewers with veg of your choice - onions, red peppers, mushrooms all work well. These kebabs are delicious barbecued, but make plenty as in my experience meat-eaters eat them all!

First find out if she is fine with eating eggs and dairy. If so, you can buy many vege burgers that are vegetarian but not vegan. If not ask her to bring her favorite vegan food for barbecuing and then you can cook corn, summer squash, potatoes, onions, mushrooms, etc. wrapped in foil or cooked on foil. The foil will be nice if she doesn't want to have her food cross contaminated with meat drippings. Just make sure nobody is dropping bits of meat into her veges (is common when cooking burgers and such).

Eat what you want. You should be able to be honest with her about what you like. I can find something vegetarian to eat at a meat eater gathering, most of the time, even if there are no veggie hotdogs or gardenburgers. You might stop by the store on your way to make sure there is something she can have. After you stop eating meat, it often gets hard to digest, so you may end up sick. I hope all goes well.

Try Portobello mushroom burgers - even meat-eaters cant deny that these are awesome. You put the porto on the grill and flip it just like you would a regular patty until the juice is on the outside and grill marks are showing up... then put it on a toasted bun and add all the regular burger condiments & veggies!! DELICIOUS!

Another thing I do is take tin foil, and coat the dull side in butter, sea salt, black pepper and dried herbs like rosemary. Then you take small red & white potato cubes, chopped onion, celery, peppers and carrots, and wrap it all up in the foil. Lay it on the grill for about 20 minutes, flip it halfway through. Its delicious!!

    Other options:

    vegetarian baked beans

    fresh fruit salad

    fresh veggie platter or salad

    grilled corn on the cob

boca spicy chik'n patties or veggie burgers

    Have a fun BBQ!

Don't knock it til you try it:

Garlic Bread + Potato Salad + BBQ sauce = One great sandwich

    I'm serious. It's really good.

I love it so much that I'm serving BBQ at my wedding. Just so I can have my potato salad sandwiches. YUM!

Also, make the baked beans vegetarian by not adding bacon. These are really good. Bush's Vegetarian Baked Beans are really good. Also, their Grillin Beans in the bourbon and brown sugar flavor do not have any meat in them and they are good too.

A nice fresh salad with Italian dressing is good for both vegetarians and nonvegetarians.

    Good luck.

I like Grilled Veggies!!! Also grilled fruit.

Fresh Garden Salad, & Baked beans if they are not made with pork.

Grilled Potato Wedges with BBQ sauce.

Think outside the box.. you'll come up with some yummy ideas too.

    veggie kabobs

    veggie burgers

    tofu pups

    black bean burgers

    a green salad

    * serve oil and vinegar with salad in case she doesnt eat dairy.

    fruits tray

    baked beans without lard!

*** try to grill the vegetarian stuff before you grill meat of possible

Im assuming that she eats dairy, most vegetarians do. If she is vegan and does not eat any animal by-products (dairy, meat, eggs) then a green salad, tofu pups or vegan black bean burgers, and a fruit tray would be great. black bean burgers are very easy to make, you may even like them yourself.

    black bean burgers

1 15oz can of black beans rinsed

    1/4 cup of bread crumbs

1/8 cup of vegetable or olive oil

mash everything together and mold into patties

grill on top of tin foil

serve with a whole wheat bun

you are a very considerate neighbor, enjoy your BBQ
