What do you have to do to become a debutante?

well i'm turning 14 and i'm thinking of becoming a debutante... well i read about them on wikipedia and it said that they usually come from a upper class and rich family. Well i'm from north alabama and my family isn't really all that rich. We're not poor but we are not millionaires either, my family is just the typical american family. My mom is a radiologist and my dad is a rocket scientist. They are divorced. Can only rich ppl be a debutante? How do i become one? Does it pay anything? Please help! And no stupid answers like "walk around with a small dog and designer clothes with other debs and make fun of the poor" Come on guys... please be serious!

A friend of mine sister who was not rich (middle class), participated in coming out debutant party for her daughter.  I went the party, it was held at a very nice hotel downtown in L.A, California     

Definition of Debutant:  young woman introduced into society: a young woman who is being introduced formally into society by appearing at a formal social event such as a dance or party for the first time.

This event is no longer only for the rich.

I will try and find out how to become one.  I'm thinking your parents could sponsor a party like this for girls in your community.

How To Become A Debutante

Back in the day when a girl became of an age where she was old enough to be married her parents would hold a ball for her and formally introduce her to society.  Then she would be invited to parties and balls.

Now in order to be a Debutant, your parents usually have to be a member of an organization that holds debutant balls.  You may want to look into Cotillion, and see if there are any of those in your area.  

There is no pay for being a debutant.  It isn't a job, it's more of a one time thing.  Your parents shell out a ton of money and you go to a big dinner.  There are usually a ton of other girls, and one by one all of their names will be read out loud.  They are then led by a male escort in front of everyone where they are usually expected to curtsy to everyone.

Usually now girls would rather just have a sweet 16 party, it is less work.
