It's not contact with pigs/pork products you need to worry about. Pigs serve as a route to transmit the disease to humans. It has already done that leap. HUMANS are now the source. It can now spread from person to person, just like a regular cold virus.
It's a month away, you are going to get slammed $$$ if you cancel through airlines/hotels. Try and wait if you can. This is not the only swine flu outbreak to hit the US. There was a whole thing back in '76 and the vaccine created more problems than the disease ever did.
My wedding is scheduled for the summer and I do not intend to cancel at this time. Wait and see, right now according to all the MX travel sites, no official cases have been linked directly to Cancun but there is one suspect case being tested. It's only one case so it's a little suspect right now.
And yes, MX is a large area; Big distance between Mexico City and the coast

Ok here is the skinny!
My fiance and I have a trip scheduled for May 17th to a very nice resort in Cancun for our honeymoon. The two kids that came from Cancun and had symptoms were most likely sick from drinking the water or eating bad food. Keep in mind there are no cases evident from Cancun. The problem with our society is we rely too much on the media for information that goes on in the world and we react in a frenzy. I would go and keep away from people that are coughing and wash your hands mulitple time, use hand sanitizer blah blah. Every year there are over 36,000 cases of death from the influenza virus. So far the swine flu is very minor.

Cancun may be "far" away from Mexico City but the airplanes coming from Mexico to the States will be full of people from all over Mexico. This flu is now transmitted from human to human, as opposed to only being in contact directly with the animal. So even by touching your tray table and then touching your face you could get it. I wouldn't risk it.

It really depends on the time of your trip. if it is not for another couple weeks or months then definitely do not cancel. however, if you are traveling within the next few days, you might reconsider. the only downside of that would be that some of our great air services are gonna charge you the same price as your trip. so, the question is...spend some time on a beach, have fun, and maybe catch a flu or sit at home, go to work and allow it to be passed by one of your coworkers or family members. why not quarterback the virus instead of being a reciever?

I'm still in Limbo about heading to Cabo for Memorial Weekend - any one have tips or ideas? I can't cancel without a huge fee and between the drug wars and flu now whats next... i rather change plans.
Most of the Travel companies are not excepting cancellations and worst charging hundreds to cancel. Sounds like someone is taking advantage of the situation.

I'm going to Riviera Maya in 2 weeks - I have no plans to cancel - if the US closes the borders then and only then will I reschedule. Be smart, bring a health kit recommended by the CDC - bring and use anti-bacterial gel and wipes and if you must, and it makes you feel better, wear a mask on the plane. Those with comprised immune systems can die from any case of the flu if they don't take precautionary measures. If in doubt, talk to you doctor. I did and I will be taking Tamiflu with me but I will only use it if I experience numerous flu-like symptoms. We need to stop panicking and the media needs to stop flooding the networks with every kind of scenario; that alone causes pandemonium. Educate yourself by talking to your healthcare personnel.

djwillia... "if you go you will die" Stop freaking everyone out. The only people that have died have been in mexico. Mexico city has 20 million people and around 100 have died. But for you to say if you go you will die is out of line and have no facts to back that up.
As to the person that asked the question, wait and see. This could blow over in a week or two. Or it could get worse, I know it sucks but your just going to have to wait.

Well first off you don't get sick from the pigs, and the kids who got sick in new your got sick from cancun, its a spread of germs, i would wait and see how serious this gets. Im supposed to go to cancun as well. i asked my travel Agent and i can change last minute i would do the same if i were you. If you do choose to go i would wash hands constantly and keep your self from crowded areas like flea markets...etc and stay in the resort limits.
