It has been cultivated since the 28th century BCE, in China, primarily for cordage. It was introduced in Europe around 1500 BCE and came to the Americas with the first colonists. As one of the safer recreational drugs, it would be legal to use if it had a lobby as powerful as the tobacco lobby behind it. On the flip side, the results from its use are not completely predictable. Some people feel good, some hallucinate, some get nothing but a sore throat from it. Maybe we need quality control.
