Why won't this dog east. Help with a dog that won't eat.?

He has stopped eating his dogfood as of last week, and has lost about 10 pounds. He has been to the vet, we got the results today....no diabetes or cancer, but something has to be wrong. He only eats if we feed him meat, and today that was a struggle getting him to do that.

Age: 10.5

Breed: Dalmation/Blue Heeler Mix

Weight: around 67 lbs dropped 10, so about 57 lbs now.

Diet: We feed him about a cup a dry dog food (twice a day), with occasional dog treats

Symptons: About 10 days ago, stopped eating his dry dog food. He will sometimes eat table food - meat and bread only. The vet ran blood tests, found nothing wrong. Looks healthy on the outside. Does have some gingivitis, so we thought that maybe his mouth hurt him to eat the dry food??? The vet gave us a mounth rinse and some pills (vitamins and something else). It just baffles us...he can't go without eating.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

You may want to try adding warm water to his dry food and mixing 1/2 of canned food with it. Did your vet check his gums and teeth? He may need a teeth cleaning. You mentioned gingivitis. This could be making his gums tender, so try adding water to his food. If he is eating table food, bread, and meat, that is a clue that he will eat softer food. Hope this gives you some help.

I have an 80 lb mutt. My dog suffers from a loss of appetite occasionally too. I normally feed her 2 cups of dry dog food twice a day. But, once she avoids the food for a day or so, I mix in steamed plain white rice and plain boiled chicken with her regular food. So, it's about 1/8 - 1/4 cup chicken breast and 1/16 - 1/8 cup rice and the rest is dry dog food. I stop or gradually lessen once she starts feeling better.

The boiled chicken and plain rice should work if her stomach is upset. It's nice and bland so she'll be able to keep it down.

If it's her teeth, the drops for the water should help. But, you can also get a teeth cleaning from the vet. The vet usually knocks out the dog and gives the teeth a good scrubbing. Afterward, you can start brushing her teeth everyday on your own. Good luck!

Dogs do go off their food occasionally - and sometimes it can be sorted out by simply switching brands. The weight drop is worrying however as normally dogs won't stop eating to the point of starvation/weight loss. I assume he's still drinking? In view of the gingivitis, it might be worth trying soaking his dry food to see if this helps. And sometimes once they've tasted the good stuff (meat!!) they get picky.

Is this dog neutered? It could just be that there's a b itch in season around and he's being upset by her - in which case, things should return to normal in another few days now.

Meanwhile soak the meal, cut out all treats and if you've been giving him human meat, that too (I know, anything to keep his weight up, but ...) - if you are in the UK, get some tins of Chappie in - when we've had dogs in kennels who stopped eating, this almost always got them going again.

Hope you can get to the bottom of this because it's frustrating as **** when you get this going on. And I do wonder whether you might consider a return to your vet/second opinion because it is still possible that they've missed something. Has he been scanned/x-rayed? I think this needs to be done in conjunction with the blood work-up to get the full picture. At at his age, sadly, it could still be some form of cancer going on.

Famous cancer doctor recommand eatting dog for health. Another doctor dissent from the opinion. Almost eatting ends is support to their body health , especially for patient health. I don't or never eat the dog. But I am not the oppositionist.

you should have an x-ray of his throat sounds to me like there is a splinter in his throat or something lodged in there. if that is the case he wont eat because it will hurt him to bend his neck and or swallow.
