USB Port fried my flash drive?

I was deleting some stuff from my flash drive when I started to smell something burning. I noticed the smell was coming from the USB port so I pulled out the flash drive. When I pulled it out, my flash drive was melted and I severely burned my fingers in the process.

What would cause this to happen? Is there something wrong with the motherboard? Or is it just the USB port? And would it be safe to turn the computer back on? I'm typing from my laptop because I don't know if i should turn on the computer.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Update:

My computer is an HP Pavilionv a6430f PC

Update 2:

Perhaps severely was a bit strong, but my finger did blister from the burn and obviously it hurts. Right now I'm more worried about the computer and whats wrong with it then my finger.

Not that I'm encouraging you to do so, but if you were "severely" burned on your fingers, perhaps you should seek both medical and legal advice. HP is responsible, even if it is no longer under warranty.

Well Rob, that could be caused by a number of things.

You know, I experienced a similar problem once a few years back when i had an old HP system. I was trying to delete some Chinese food that I had just ordered via my mouth and i burned my fingers on a dumpling, just like you did on your flash drive. Identical situation. I thought I was the only one, but I am now comforted by the fact that I am not alone in this world.

Unfortunately, the real cause of the issue remains unknown. That's life for you...
