Cell phones in other countries?

I'm going to China for 2 weeks this summer, and I am unsure what to do about my cellphone. I live in the U.S. & have AT&T. Can/should I switch to an international plan for a month? Should I just get a calling card? Someone told me I could order a Chinese SIM card for pretty cheap. Any info would be great. Thanks :)

If your AT&T phone uses standardized sim cards and is unlocked, then you can walk into a chinese cell shop and buy a sim.. in othrwords lease a number. You look through the book and more auspicious or lucky numbers or easier to remember numbers are more expensive.

Just pick something from the book and pick a plan... You will need a Chinese friend to fanyi or translate for you but its easy... then you put money on your phone... and yr good. Its pretty cheap really.

You can get dumb inexpensive phones there too.

DO NOT use your phone on AT&T's network just cause it may be quad band. My ex wife ran up a 600 dollar bill really fast because she kept calling me during one of my trips to panic abut how to house train our new puppy while I was gone. Its really expensive to roam in China.

Texting is even more popular there than it is here, but make sure your new contacts know to use English or Pinyin if they must do Chinese cause its easier to look that up in a dictionary.

I love China, Have fun! Be brave and eat stuff you wouldn't normally, you wont be disappointed if you keep an open mind

You can add a package on your att account but you need to make sure your phone is a quad band phone. In addition, you need to leave that international plan on your account for at least 3 months after you get back to avoid overage fees. I would just buy a chinese prepaid cell phone once you got there.

Its easier to just buy a throw away cell phone when your there, they are everywhere and its about 30 cents a minute, which is probably less than you will pay otherwise..
