hummus is pureed chickpeas with olive oil, a bit of garlic, seasonning and sometimes tahine (sesame paste) with lemon.
There are many versions but its always made with chickpeas and olive oil.
It's originally from lebanon/syria/palestine and later in israel and the rest of the world due to immigration and the media.
you eat it with originally with toasted pita bread or you can dip carrot/celery or cucamber sticks in it as a healthy snack.
Sometimes its served with falafel as a spread with lots of salad in a pocket of pita.
its available in middle eastern restaurants and most large supermarkets. you can make it yourself though, with a blender and plenty of lemon juice, black pepper, 1 close of garlic and lots of olive oil.

In America, I think most people use it as a dip...for raw veggies, crackers, pita bread or pita chips, etc. I like it also as a sort of sandwich spread. I'll spread a little inside half a pita pocket & then add whatever veggies, herbs, etc. that I want. Also, if I have some already made when I'm having tacos/taco salad, I'll use a couple dollops in/on those. To me it's a good sub for cheese in Mexican or other sort of spicy foods and tastes a lot better and is much cheaper than processed vegan cheeses. Some people also like it with falafel, but to me that's like chickpea overkill. :) If you've never tried it though, don't expect to automatically love it. I've found that most people either loooove hummus, or can't stand it. There isn't much of an in-between usually.

Hummus is a chick pea dip. It is made with chickpeas (garbonzo beans), sesame paste (tahini), lemon juice, and garlic.
You should be able to buy it in the refridgerated section of the grocery store.
It good with fresh pita, baked pita chips, baby carrots, cucumber slices, etc.
I eat about a pint a week! It makes an easy light lunch, about 1/2 c. hummus on a plate, with a light sprinkle of paprika and a pita cut in 1/4's. Add a spoonfull of crumbled feta cheese, some kalamata olivers, a few pickles and peppres and your golden!

Hummus also usually contains olive oil. Sometimes it is flavored with roasted red peppers, olives and/or herbs. You can use it as a dip or spread for any type of savory crackers/bread or crudites.
