The prologue is a part of the story which describes the events that occurred before the real start of story. Before writting a prologue ask yourself whether you are starting the story in the right place and whether or not you could use flashback.

The preface is the bit where the author talks directly to the reader about things the reader needs to know before starting to read the book. This is more usual in a non-fiction book, although you occasionally see them in prestigious works of fiction when they are reprinted after several years, and the author wants to discuss what's happened since the first edition came out.

A prologue is what happened before the actual story.

A preface is just an insight to possibly what the story is about. For example, the preface to one of my story's is:

'Love. The one word that the world seemingly evolved around, everyone wanted it and didn't want it at the same time. I never gave much thought to it; I never really cared if it walked into my life. Until I met him, then love became my life. I would happily die for him with a smile on my face. What would you do though, if you weren't allowed to love? If you were made to give up what made your life worth living? You would fight, or at least I would. You'd get even. You'd give up whatever you could to make that love happy, to make that love yours – forever.'

It tells you a bit about something that will be the main idea of the story, whereas a prologue is like a 'before the story.'

    Hope that helped =).

A prologue is normally a part of the story - it's about the characters and the universe of the book.

A preface is set in the real world - it's about the author and maybe how or why he wrote it.
