Questions about Giradia?

I got a Rottweiler puppy 3 weeks ago. At first her stools were fine but after about two days she began having diarrhea. I took her to the vet and she was diagnosed with Giardia. The vet gave her Panacur and two doses of Flagyl but she has not gotten any better. She has not gained any weight in three weeks because everything seems to pass through her system so quickly. She eats a lot and drinks a lot of water and otherwise seems healthy. She was tested for Giardia again and the vet said it was negative but the symptoms never improved. The vet is now doing blood tests because she wonders if her pancreas is working properly. Has anyone else ever gone through this? Can Giardia still be the problem?

No, if the test was negative giardia could not be the problem. I have seen this once in a doberman puppy. She had giardia, then a few weeks later came back with the same symptoms. Our vet called the testing company to ask about a recheck so soon. A false positve or negative is not possible (assuming it was a SNAP test).

We hospitalized on suspicion of parvo. The antibiotics and fluids given had the dog cleared up in a few days.

Not sure about the pancreas, but the blood tests will tell you. Since she is eating and drinking, I highly doubt parvo. But maybe she needs to be on IV fluids since she is not keeping anything in her. Some fluids, antibiotics, and a bland diet might be what she needs.

Talk about the hospitalizationand treatment when you speak to your vet about the results of the blood work.

    Hope your puppy feels better.

  • I've not heard of this in conjunction with giardia. Generally the symptoms clear up within the first few days of being on the Flagyl(Metronidazole). I would suspect that she has something else going on besides the giardia. What type of food are you feeding her? She might have a very sensitive digestive system. We have a few young puppies at the practice that I work at that have to be on probiotics and specialized food. Sometimes if a young puppy gets a severe enough giardia it can predispose them to a lifetime of digestive sensitivity.

This is what happened to me as well. My puppy came from a sick litter so they thought it was Giardia as well but it never showed up on the fecal tests. We gave her the meds and switched her to really expensive vet gastrointestinal food and tried to wait it out but it wouldn't get better. Turned out she had sensitivities to fillers in foods and after a few switches we found that filler free dog food solved all our problem almost immediately. We used Orijen or Now! brand. I tried some filler food on her recently, she is a year and a half now and same thing all over. I have currently switched to raw and still no problems.

how long was she on panacur? giardia treatment is 5 days of panacur. how did they diagnose it? microscope exam or giardia snap test? if it was a microscope exam, giardia can be difficult to find- so yes, they could still be present. has your pup been treated for coccidia? what kind of food is she on? you could try another round of panacur, but checking for pancreatic insufficiency is not a bad idea.

  • Repeat the treatment...try metranitazole?.

    *&* Treat for COCCIDIA-it's often present w/a FALSE-negative fecal.
