My rental house (Columbus, Oh) has very old windows that don't open. Is this legal?
In order to open the windows I have to use a handle and crank them open. Many of the joints have deteriorated and wont open more than a few inches.
We would like to open them because of the breeze. I also have a sneaking suspicion that it violates a fire code.
If you find your info on a website please send the address.
thanks!
I don't care that they crank open. It just takes a long time to open them and I was wondering about safety issues.

I am thinking that if there are at least two exits out of the dwelling that function properly and are not blocked, the place should be up to fire code in that regard. But don't quote me. I would stop at a fire station or call them and ask them about it.

In an emergency a fireman will break through your window. It doesnt have to open it just has to be there. Your landlord is not breaking any laws. With that said......
So you have to crank them with a handle..BOO FREAKING HOO!!!!!
Would you like windows that open by themselves when you order them to open?
