Sighting in a pellet gun?
Hey, should I have be able to hit a target consistantly in between the crosshairs within twelve feet? My dad says 12 feet is too close. Will the accuracy change if I back up a little? 15-20 feet?

Without knowing what gun you have and how you intend to use it, I can only speak in generalities. Generally you want to sight a pellet gun (air-rifle) in at closer to 50 feet (or further depending on what you're going to do with your pellet gun) than 15 feet. Most Olympic matches are shot at 10 meters (33 feet). Most field target matches are shot at anywhere from 10-50 meters. And most hunters will want to sight their pellet guns in at a distance where they feel that (a. they'll likely be able to shoot at game animals. (b. they can keep all their shots in a 1-1.5 inch circle. For most of us that's somewhere between 15-30 yards.
The actual process is fairly straightforward. I'm simply going to link you a website with detailed instructions. http://www.pyramydair.com/site/articles/scopes-par...

I would sight it in for whatever the average range is that you expect to use it at. Remember, pellets do not fly straight, they start curving downwards as gravity takes effect. The other thing to consider is the higher velocity it is, the longer the effective range and the longer it takes before the pellet starts to drop significantly. What I'm saying there is if it is a little bb/pellet gun I wouldn't expect it to drop squirrels at 50 feet, but if it is a higher velocity (like 700 to 1200 FPS) then it starts to become a viable possibility. The other thing to consider is be very careful of what is behind what you are shooting at. You really don't want to accidentally hit the neighbor's window or dog, or the neighbor themself. That can really get bad in a hurry.
Good luck!

Way to close. But it matters how powerful the gun is. If its higher than 800 F.P.S try from 50 yards. If not try the 15-20ft.
