How can I make a program that works with Google Maps?
I want to create a simple overlay over Google Maps and allow me to label or name a house, or location, or body of water, etc. Id like to have it on my webpage for family members to use. Cant find anything.
Would making an "API" to use with Google maps require any specific permissions from Google in order to use it on my site? I am not computer handy and dont even know how I am going to make this. Probably hire someone. Thanks so far for the answers!

It's called an API.
You can read Google's own documentation here: http://code.google.com/apis/maps/

There's a Google Map API that you can tap into to make your own specific Google Map stuffs.
