Why is there a gay culture?
Why is someone's sexuality so important that it becomes the basis of their identity?
Note that I don't mean a normal person who happens to be homosexual; I mean a flaming, "oh my god, here they come", prancing around person. You know the stereotype I mean.
"you have to understand not very gay person has there sexuality as the center of there personality thats only a minority of gay people." I know. That's why I made the distinction. ;)
"Identity - because the "loud" mannerisms make it clear that you are (though not always correct) gay, as straight guys most often would never be caught doing anything "loud"" <<< That's exactly what I'm asking about.
"I'm gay and I'm not flaming. Most of gay guys I know are not either." I know; I never claimed most were.
"Why are there racial cultures? Why is someone's skin color so important that it becomes the basis of their identity?
Some folks just do what makes them happy. They ain't hurting no one, so leave 'em be." Even though you were being sarcastic with the first part, I agree with it. And for the second part, who said they were harming anyone?

There are many sociological reasons for this. I think the situation you described (the "flaming" culture) is one that is borne out of identity and defiance.
Identity - because the "loud" mannerisms make it clear that you are (though not always correct) gay, as straight guys most often would never be caught doing anything "loud"
Defiance - because even if people who are "loud" know that they are standouts and sometimes annoying, their continued actions are saying "what are you gonna do about it?" - and a defiance that is understandable, given the fact that our rights as gay people are trampled upon every single day.

I guess that they subscribe to that culture because it makes them happy. If they really enjoy it, then I don't see any reason to stand in their way.
Personally, I'm not attracted to effeminate guys. However, that doesn't mean that I can't get along with them or that I can't be friends with them. Sure, I can see how their personalities can be abrasive at first. Once you get over the initial culture shock, you realize that its not a big deal at all.

These are the folks that have become obsessed with the opposite sex and they are a reinactment of what they think the opposite sex is about. It's just a lot of drama and most of them are horrible actors/actresses anyway. This is what we refer to as drama queens.
