Keep my full-time job or get job for field experience?
Need advice. I have a full-time job right now. We are being let go in September. I will get a $4,100 bonus if I stay until then.
Im also a full-time student with plans to graduate by May 2010. I need to take a lot of classes to accomplish that. I wont be able to take full time unless I let it spill over an extra semester.
I have an opportunity to get a part-time job in the field my major is in (somewhat) and could use that experience.
Is it worth it just to focus on school, sacrifice the extra money to finish a bit earlier? I also need to stay on schedule for grad school too.
thanks a lot!
Also keeping in mind the economic problems.
I live at home though, but still

It's funny I came across your question, I'm going through a similar dilemma. I really want to focus on school, but work is really hindering my success. I've finally decided after a lot of thinking and planning, that it is going to be best for me to quit this job, look for a part time job within my field, and finish school with it being my top priority. I think that if you have the opportunity to do this, to take advantage of it. Not a lot of people can even think about having this opportunity, and you don't want to look back later on and regret not taking the chance. Follow your heart and do what is right for you. It's ok to be a little selfish. I hope whatever you decide makes you happy!! :)

First of all, you shouldn't be "hanging around doing nothing," you should spend at least 40 hours per week looking for a job if you're unemployed. If money's not an option, I would start contacting firms about an unpaid internship in order to gain the experience in your field. It is hard to get an entry-level job if you don't have experience, so this might give you the experience you desperately need. If you still need money, you could look for a part-time evening job. Good luck!

School always trumps work. Since you live at home I would suggest you go with the field experience. You can take out loans for school (do subsidized), and pay them back when you graduate (I owed almost $20,000 when I graduated and I pay $25 a month). Money comes and goes but your time is valuable. Now, you say you can finish school earlier...I always wished I'd stayed in school a bit longer (but I lived on campus and wanted to stay for different reasons [fun]), that's good for grad school. Look, you're going to work for the rest of our life once you finish school, that's at least 30 years--so if you don't HAVE to work then maybe you shouldn't and you can focus on school. Good luck in all of your endeavors!
