Why are Muslims discouraged to believe, "Obey the Messenger" means Obey the message of the messenger, Quran?
The terminology is very clear and straight forward, a messenger delivers a message, you obey the message, you fulfill the commandment. What is there to add.
This all must be viewed with the knowledge that God confirmed that God perfected the religion of Islam and guaranteed the authenticity of the entire Quran, declared repeatedly the simplicity of the message plus encouraged us to meditate on the message of the Quran over and over again, declared the completeness of the message for the whole of mankind and all times to come.

You are talking about Mohammedans not Muslims.
Quran is the Scripture of Exalted Power that is sent down by The Exalted in Power and "obey the messenger" was meant for those who met and spoke with the messenger as the Quran was revealed.
The Quran is the Power of Allah and needs no Imam and there is no messenger to come, but Muslims who wish to make Islam a Church to compare with Christianity make the messenger a pardner of Allah and do not realise it.
We cannot follow the commands of Allah in Quran as to how to speak to the messenger or how early to go to his home for a meal and how we should leave immediately after the meal and not to seek idle talk with the messenger, which goes to show that "obey the messenger" was meant for those who lived during the life of the messenger and not those like us.
Islam and the Quran need to be brought into current times and not to be buried in ancient Arabia.
Allahuakbarr!

Peace, This means you should read the Hadiths which contain the sayings of the Prophet pbuh and that you should implement what he said aslong as it does not contradict the Quran...Thus if you reject the Hadith you reject the Prophet..So called Quranists state taht the sunnah is in the Quran but that is a false claim and they have nothing to back that up except mere guesses.. Also regarding the ruler; if they are a corrupt ruler, they do not allow all muslims to come into his land; his family drink alcohol and get involved in many haraam things then you can go against them; However if the ruler is just and good and helps the people then you should listen to the ruler.. Peace

for majority Obey Messenger is NOT complete without obeying bukhary and six others !
bukhary and his 6 cohorts putting their words and opinions in Prophet's mouth ! (Astaghfirallah)
the gentleman, would never quote Complete verse of Surah Hashr
[59:7] Whatever GOD restored to His messenger from the (defeated) communities shall go to GOD and His messenger (in the form of a charity). You shall give it to the relatives, the orphans, the poor, and the traveling alien. Thus, it will not remain monopolized by the strong among you. You may keep the spoils given to you by the messenger, but do not take what he enjoins you from taking. You shall reverence GOD. GOD is strict in enforcing retribution.
what do they have to say about those ahadith which prohibits hadith writting?,and also what about all the caliphs which followed the same !
written in their own sacred books !

Good Try Life Guru BUT You Fail:
I agree with your statement: "Obey the Messenger" means Obey the message of the messenger, Quran. And certainly Messenger Muhammad (pbuh) practiced and preached Qur'an as HE (pbuh) understood Qur'an better than any one in the world, and we must practice Qur'an as was practiced By Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), we are not allowed to practice Qur'an as per our own personal discretion, as Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) has already set HIS personal example as to how to follow Qur'an.
I do understand your concern, lets put 22 verses commanding us to Obey Allah & Obey Rasool aside for a moment.
How about these mentioned below verses of SUAR FATIKHA
1:6 Guide us in the right path;
1:7 The path of those whom You blessed; not of those who have deserved wrath, nor of the strayers.
Who are those blessed ones..?
Will look forward for your answer.
Dua for you :)

i'm really shocked to see that many of the answerers r refering to a few ayahs repeatedly answering whatever u ask.obeying Allah and obeying prophet is the same indeed but does it mean obeying all hadiths without varifying their authenticity?i don't beleive that every hadith is fabricated or false but if any hadith conflicts with the quran should we obey it?in many discussuion i've heard that a leader of the former umaya tribe admited hat he had attached 10000+ false hadiths to bukhari sharif & others.and when we was about 2 die he admitted his sin in his last hours of life.(i donno in which year it was) and later numourous compilation ,varification & correction gave us the present version of 'sihah sittah' which is still in controversy.

You know... from the point of view of someone new to all of this, I kind of feel the need to play devils advocate to both sides.
I guess I am somewhat a Quran-aloner, though even here I don't really fit in. I would agree Quran is perfect, and is the perfect guide. I do not feel it is indecipherable as some would have me believe, nor do I feel that by not following particular scholars or the hadiths of particular sects I am doomed to fail at understanding it on my own. If that were the case, everyone not born into Islam would be due to fail, just because of the simple fact they'd need to blindly choose a group to stick themselves inside of. Because let me tell you... the varying beliefs, to someone new to Islam, is so incredibly confusing it makes one want to turn back and not even try to understand who is right and who is wrong.
It is only by shutting all of it out, and going back to reading Quran, I was even able to focus on the important thing (God).
However, all of that being said, I think to say there is nothing to be learned from scholars or hadiths is somewhat foolish of me to believe as well. I am not of the opinion, that just because Quran contains everything pertinent to following God, that all other information in this world should be discarded. From quite a few hadiths and tafsir with references to hadiths, I have learned a lot of things historical in nature I would not have learned if I refused to view them with an open mind. And while I am not personally comfortable attesting to the complete accuracy of anything outside of Quran (because I was not there, I cannot verify it except by heresay), I do think there must be some things that are accurate in their representation. There probably are traditions that have been passed down through the generations.
I just feel it is up to me and my own mind to decipher those things. I'm not the type to turn down anything as a source of knowledge, not if it makes sense to me and I pray for guidance in regards to it, nor am I the type to blindly follow it without being completely comfortable within myself that it is the right thing.
I agree with much of what you are saying. I just don't believe I'm deviating from Gods message by seeking to understand it more fully, and follow it in the best possible ways.
Regardless though, and I will continue saying this, what is important to me is that I pray to God for guidance and I follow what my heart tells me. Whichever way I am lead later on down the road.. then it is meant to be, and I doubt any can argue with this.

"And whatsoever the Messenger (Muhammad [sal-Allâhu 'alayhi wa sallam]) gives you, take it; and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain (from it). And fear Allâh; verily, Allâh is Severe in punishment."
(Qur'aan 59:07)
All the Companions of Allaah's Messenger, peace be upon him, without exception understood that no one could reject an authentic report from Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. The Qur'aan and the Sunnah are both primary sources of legislation in Islaam and one cannot be rejected without rejecting the other and leaving the fold of Islaam as both the Qur'aan and Sunnah are Revelation from Allaah.

Quran says: “Obey Allah and obey Rasol and Ulul Amer (leaders with authority) amongst you”.
Obey Allah refers to Quran and its Shareah ( Commandments) for which Rasol is sent to you.
Obey Rasol refers to both – the Quran and Muhammad (saw) in person because Quran speaks through him and he is a living Quran. Quran also says in Surah Rahman> “Take it whatever Rasol gives you (believer) and leave it whatever Rasol forbids” It means according to Quran we have to obey and follow Muhammad in physical and spiritual meanings!
Obedience of Ulul Amer is only withing the Sharea of Quran and practice of Muhammad.
Hence Quran is not sufficient to fully obey Allah until we follow the orders and practices of prophet Muhammad (saw).

Yes, you're absolutely right. I've heard some people say to Shi'a Muslims "obeying" the 12 Imams is shirk! Sorry, but obeying prophet Mohammad, the 12 Imams and God are all the same thing. It means obeying Islam and thus obeying God! If I obey my mother, I'm obeying Islam and God too! :)
