Scholarships just because of your race?
As we all know America is the country where all races come together to discriminate against other races. It is so dumb really... They seriously give scholarships to people just because they are black or Native American? I would have no problem against this if they gave one to white people as well.
(I was searching through my campus emails the other day and found my scholarship information, I did NOT qualify for most of them because of my race... and it's not fair. I don't understand why something isn't being done about this. What is your oppinion about this issue?
TO JAMAL L:... How can you say there is nothing holding white people back?... you think all white people are rich or something? Let me tell you I probably grew up more poor than alot of black people in this country so dont give me that. Black people have just as much oppurtunity in this country as white people do. It's how you use it that counts.
Choctaw: your answer is irrelevant.. you go around harassing people and that makes you a bully. And I did benefit from the civil rights movement in that I am allowed to vote... I have the same rights as a man. I am not obsessed with race, this country and the college I go to is. It's not fair that you can ask questions about being 25% black but I cant ask them about being white.
NOTE: I DID NOT QUALIFY FOR THESE SCHOLARSHIPS BECASE I AM WHITE. lol... i'm not good enough because I am white.
lol... i've made the deans list all 3 years i've been here. I think of myself as a smart person. I just dont understand what makes a certain race special enough to get scholarships just because of their race. It shouldn't be done, it should be based on how hard working, smart, talented, and determined you are to get a degree. Obviously people who get these scholarships have no problem with it at all, but if it was just white people who got the scholarships there would be an uproar. All I ask is for equality. Is that so wrong?
Fizzybub: in America they DO have specialized scholarships for asians... one of my friends is vit and she has full paid!
it is still discrimination no matter what any of you say :)... it doesn't matter what race you are, you can still be discriminated against.
LexDiamond: Your answer is great. What do you mean about universities giving 50% of their spots to white people? I know about the affirmative action which i disagree on... i dont think there should be spots reserved for ANYBODY! It should be based on the individual. And if you deserve the spot you should get it, they shouldn't discriminate! that is dumb. I am just a plain old American gal who's ancestors fought in just about every American war. I probably couldn't claim those scholarships for European-Americans.
I think it is perfectly fine for a group to fund scholarships. It gives more people the oppurtunity to go to college. I just dont like that the University I go to is majorly offering scholarships based on race that I dont qualify for. Call me selfish or whatever... I have the right to go to school just like anybody else I hope.
LexDiamond: You seem to be on a roll, why are black school so much worse than white schools? Don't tax payers in that region pay some to the school? Isn't that how they are mostly funded? I live in a TOTALLY different world than NYC. I live in Arkansas and we dont have Black and White schools by themself. We are mixed together ( I am from the southern part)
Lexdiamond: That is horrible! Why isn't something being done??? What COULD they do?. Our education system down here isn't very good but that up there sounds alot worse... Who is in charge of that stuff!?!? they need to get somebody else.

You kinda have a point. Kinda.
Yes, there are scholarships based solely on race, but you have to look at ALL aspects of the college admissions process before you get a real picture of how skewed the numbers really are based on race, and you also have to look at the preceeding 12 years as well.
There are scholarships based on race because in comparison to Whites, minorities statistically have a much worse chance of simply getting in the door, never mind actually getting in. Looking at the conditions of many predominantly Black and Latino schools, we get unqualified teachers, poor security, poor facilities and an overwhelming lack of supplies. From 3rd grade to 5th grade i remember having to share textbooks and workbooks because my school couldnt afford to buy em. I'm goin on 20 now, meaning that many of the kids who dealt with this at my age are either entering or have already entered the college admissions process now.
Lookin further, naturally if one has a blatant lack of supplies then they'll do worse, right? yup. The pathetic excuse of an educational system basically gets us up to 11th grade and from there we're on our own. Now considering the blatant lack of preparation; how well do you think we'll all do on the SAT's? Poorly. We aint have Kaplan, Princeton Review or any of that fancy stuff so as natural selection states, roughly 50% of the inner city youths dont make it.
These statistics are a greater indication of poverty rather than race, but at the same time there's also a direct correlation between Poverty and Race. 8% of Whites are poor; 23% of Blacks and roughly 20% of Hispanics are poor, and since we have higher birthrates and an overall younger population, a greater percentage of our youths deal with these odds. You're nowhere near as likely to encounter a White kid dealing with these problems as you are a Black kid
Furthermore, the College Admissions process in and of itself if f*cked up. Say a college has 10,000 spots. Roughly 5-10% of those spots are actually reseved for affirmative action candidates. Of the rest, its divided up into Athletes (10%), Allumni (annother 10%), people who give donations (20%) and the rest of us (50%). So of those spots, roughly 50% of em are gonna be available for the White people, whereas we Blacks get to contend with all other minorities for 10%. Its not fair to either of us, but realistically we get the shorter end of the stick anyway.
Annother aspect that has to be taken into account is the fact that MOST of the money that is set aside for minority scholarships is NOT government money. Most of that money is money that was donated by other minorities. the NAACP is funded 100% by Black people, as are Hispanic and Asian interest groups. So basically you're sayin that Minorities dont have a right to invest in their own communities without being racist; which is kinda unfair. Why shouldnt we invest in our own youth? I for one am tired of seein' man shot dead in the street. And they're not just because we're minorities, its because we're minorities who are excelling against the odds, we're representing a more positive side to our communities that doesnt get shown at all in the general public.
Finally, there ARE scholarships for White students. I go to a university in New York, and over this weekend I came across at least TWO DOZEN scholarships for Italian, Polish, Irish, German, Jewish and Russian-Americans. As long as you acknowledge your heritage or at least show some sort of interest in it, there are MILLIONS of dollars of free money out there for you to get. You just gotta look around.
EDIT:
When i say 50% White i mean more along the lines of Regular Joes & Janes, not White people who have millions of dollars and connections to all kinds of resources (see allumni, athletes and donators).
But you're right in that everythin should be based on merit. Unfortunately, as I've gone on in life i've realised that MOST things arent based on merit. If everyone was placed on an even footing from day one then I could understand how you feel but the truth is that we DONT start off on the same level, even as kids. Black school districts get much less money & worse teachers than white ones. Rich kids get more opportunities than poor kids. I live in NYC and you can literally go to one school in a Black neighborhoods and end up with leaky roofs and damn near illiterate teachers. Take a 15 minute drive and the schools with the White kids got smiling teachers, new computers, swimming pools & sports teams, and all kinds of test prep. Both public schools, both in the same city, only difference is demographics.
Now if we're in a marathon, but you start off 2 miles ahead of me, is it really unfair if i cross the finish line on a bicycle?
Ever wonder why whenever you look at universty demographics, theres always a 15 or 20% "other"? Most of those "others" arent mixed race, theyre just rich kids who werent counted with the general admissions. All of that crap is a sham
EDIT:
Its because Arkansas is mainly made up of small towns, so that even if there are Black & White neighborhoods, theres really only one or two schools so everyone ends up in the same school.
In NYC, basically we have this retarded system which redistributes all of the wealth highly unevenly. First off, the schools in NYC only get 88 cents for every dollar constituents pay in taxes, and a disproportionate amount of our money goes to suburbs. Secondly, alot of bureaucracy f*cked up in that it basically distributes more money to higher-performing schools. This SOUNDS fair...except that if your school was high performing in the first place, why would you need more cash? Meanwhile, lower performing schools are penalised and LOSE funding, until eventually they shut down entirely.
Now all of the former students are crowded into ANNOTHER ghetto school nearby, and the downward spiral continues. The Bad schools perpetually get worse, while the good ones get better. And unremarkably, the bad ones happen to be Black, while the good ones are White.
There ARE ways of getting around this, the High School exams basically allow you to go to any high school you get into, so if your marks are high enough you can go to school wherever you want.
But this points back to the same problem i mentioned earlier; if you come from a weak educational background, you practically have no shot of actually doing well on this exam. So while in theory its a way out, in reality not so much.
Thats why I think its important that we all actually START OFF on the same foot. If we begin life in a crappy state of affairs, chances are we'll go through it in a crappy state too. Once again, alot of it isnt about being the best or the brightest, its about who you are, where you were born, who your parents were, and how well connected you are.

I can totally understand your feelings when it comes to the race based scholarships. I would love to see what would happen if I offered a scholarship that said "Must be of a White decent" and made that a main qualification. However, it is legal. I wish it were not. It is as legal as having universities dedicated to black people, but not white. Imagine if I opened up the National Association of White People in compromise of the NAACP. Or imagine there being a National Association of White Secondary School Teachers, instead of the one which exists for Black teachers. Of finally, imagine there being a White History Month. Well, you get the picture. Nobody said the world was fair. You will have to do what I did when I went to college. Work full time and go to the university full time. It just means a social life is out of the question for you. I hope this helps.

They don't just hand you the money. You would normally go through some sort of application process. So, either way, white black or whatever, you still have to apply for something like everybody else. In my opinion, the other kind of scholarships are unnecessary but they don't make it some kind of minority free for all. Its just another scholarship like any other. Besides, most were made in a time where a bunch of minorities were below the poverty line and black people did not have equal opportunitiy to even be accepted to a college. Think about your HISTORY for a second.

Scholarships are a form of reparation for all the pain the U.S. government has caused for minority groups, ESPECIALLY native Americans. How would you feel if a group of people moved into your house and slowly took over until you're living in your backyard?
I'm not saying that ALL non-whites have it hard, I'm just saying that you do not know what it's like unless you walked a day in their shoes. Not everyone gets the same opportunities. Don't complain about reverse discrimination where there is none. If you search through FastWeb, you'll find thousands of scholarship opportunities that are unrelated to race.

I feel the same way about scholarships here in New Zealand. People of maori and pacific islander descent get special entry into university courses and they receive special scholarships as well.
I don't get it either...they don't have special scholarships for people of european, american, australian, or asian or any other ethnic descent. Kinda strange really...and yea, not fair at all how they are advantaged...
It feels like we have to work harder to get into university/college courses or to receive a scholarship.

Ya. Actually, in most western countries they don't have special scholarships for Asians. You see, Asians don't whine and moan about the white man owing them something. Did the white man do them wrong? Damn straight they did. Stole them from China and sent them into caves with a glass full of nitro or old wet dynamite. Made them build railroads. Sterilized them so they couldn't breed. Invaded thier countries and bullied them. Nuked some of them. And guess what? They all go to uni and they don't get special treatment by complaining that they're oppressed and it's all the white mans fault.
That is why you will see Asia taking over economically. Japan and China are on the rise, full of young go getters that don't make excuses and don't try to leech off the system dragging down the economy, wasting money educating people who are just avoiding work.
It's not at all fair. What it is is weakness. The political system in the west caters to the people who complain the most.

It's ok to discriminate when it's doing something positive...or if the person being discriminated against is white....backassward thinking if you ask me. No one should discriminate against anybody for anything based on race, ethnicity, religion, or any other superficial judgment. I am all for allowing EVERYONE to have an equal shot at anything.

I don't agree with schools that give scholarships because of race.
Scholarships should be given on a basis of Academia and the families financial situation. I was offered a scholarship at a school because I am part Native American, which is CRAZY. I, of course refused. I don't depend on my race to get me places.

what gets me is comments like this " Most white people are well-off and don't need scholarships, and if they can't pay for college then it's their parents fault because there is absolutely nothing holding white people back." how in the F*CK do you know this? This right here proves that some people are brainwashed in there beliefs of what white people are like and how they live. That was such an uneducated answer.

oh, get over yourself.......you troll...........your one of those delusional people that live in lala land....that think EVERYTHING is on equal playing ground......and perhaps it is getting there......(but it's not fully there yet)...........yes it's true their are Blacks,American Indians (true Americans), Latinos.......and Asians Americans that have scholarships.......their are Grant programs also available for ANYONE that qualifies........do you recall our most recent history........less than 40 years ago segregation was still in existence.....do you think that since 1492 that the HATE and unfairness that has been shown to the "so called" minorities can be so easily erased......these programs allow these groups to better themselves....and their communities..........if you think your Ethnic group has been treated unfairly......then lobby for more rights.......like the Blacks did during the 1960's for Civil Rights.......You as a Woman.....have benefited from these very laws that have benefited minorities......so, you should be thanking them.........rather than whining and ridiculing.........(now, Who's obsessed with RACE again...........???) I'd say you.......with your underhanded Questions....................
Edit: I bully people.....okay........(if you refer back to my question......I said ALL answers are welcome........unlike you)......and I'm not even BLack....so don't try and pull that "crap" with me.........like I said your delusional........
Edit: perhaps, your just not "SMART ENOUGH"?
SURE: you can SAY whatever you want to online.....(Deans list......"whatever" list you'd like).....I highly doubt it......but anyways......"that's in your fantasy world".........IF your so, smart, you wouldn't be complaining.......You would have gotten an Academic Scholarship.......(regardless of RACE).........also, on another Note......those so, called preferential scholarships you speak of......are HIGHLY competitive........so, NOTHING is ever GIVEN or handed out........

I think it's stupid.
All of the other races thinks it's completely fair, though.
Especially blacks, who since our president is black, feel like they're better than everyone else and deserve some kind of special treatment.
If we had scholarships for only white students, we'd be racist.
If we had white history month, we'd be racist.
But they can have both of those and it's "fair?"
Ugh, things like this make me sick.
And they wonder why there are still racist people around...
(I'm not racist, btw)
