How many Ford Taurus brakes lines rusted through?
The brakes on my 97 Taurus went out unexpectedly yesterday. Brake fluid was dripping on the ground under the driver's door. I looked there and found a rear metal brake line had rusted through under the driver's door.
When I did an Internet search, the first site that came up had what could easily have been a picture of my brake lines. They rusted in exactly the same location.
Further seaching showed many other complaints of exactly the same problem. One said that if you have ABS, you will not loose braking when this happens. I certainly did. Another says the lines are stainless and will not rust. Mine certainly did.
The rust occurs right at a plastic shield that some people think holds salt and moisture. It is too much of a coincidence that multiple people have had the same problem at the same exact point.
Anyone else have this problem? Sure looks like a design flaw to me.
Additional: Last night, I started replacing the bad part. It is MUCH more extensive than I thought. About two feet of both lines are really bad. It is not at a joint, they are continuous lines from front to back. The part were they were covered in plastic looks brand new, the next few feet is terrible.

Yes the brake lines do rust out on these, very common especially if you live where you have winter and a lot of salt on the roads.
it does not matter if you have ABS or not, if you are loosing brake fluid you will not have brakes!

Now you have learned 2 things.
1 you can't trust reading about cars on the internet. Every Bozo thinks they are a mechanic.
2 Fords suck.
FORD----Fix Or Repair Daily
Go to an ASE master mechanic and have the brake lines replaced.
Leave the plastic shield off.
I'd inspect the gas line that runs there too!!!

brake lines tend to rust where they have couplings holding them together the salt gets in there and after some time they rust to slow this down pack the area with grease.

looks such as you would be getting ripped. Its not that onerous you will could desire to do away with the tire and disconnect the hose. additionally you will could desire to bleed the equipment as quickly as you harm the line are gets in and you'll be able to desire to do away with it. superb thank you to do the is placed a sprint rubber line from the bleeder valve right into a can of brake fluid that way while your bleeding it no air can come back into the equipment .
