You really need to discuss this with your doctor. Any changes in diet or exercise could negatively affect other aspects of your health. Most will advise limiting sodium intake, losing weight if needed and exercise along with efforts to reduce stress. Keep in mind though that not all cases of hypertension respond to non-medical treatment. (Remember why they call hypertension "the silent killer", it's the effects that you don't see or feel that kill you) Good luck and take care.

high readings can mean that silently your getting damage to your heart and kidneys. Limiting salt and weight reduction through limiting calorie intake and exercise are non-medication solutions.
The types of medication that your doctor should prescribe depend on you as a person.
In general, if you go on a drug and suddenly stop taking it, then a rebound increase in blood pressure usually occurs. This is especially true with clonidine so I would avoid that drug.
Provided your heart does not have a condition that precludes its use, the cheapest and time proven medication that both lowers blood pressure and lowers risks of BP related disease is :
Beta blocker and thiazide diuretic.
I would use generic Sectral as the beta blocker and HCTZ as the diuretic. Some beta blockers get into the brain and cause nightmares but sectral does not get into the brain.
Doctors tend to like to prescribe a mixed diuretic like dyazide or maxide, to avoid potassium loss, but there is a potential serious interaction with NSAID drugs that affects the kidneys (proven with indocin, but not evalutated with other NSAID drugs).

I too suffered from high BP, I took my meds regularly for 12 years.
I found that after I quit smoking, lost about 30lbs and then started regularly exercising that my BP slowly started to come down...
I also found that altering my diet and removing all white things, white sugar, flour, dairy, and white potato helped to shed the pounds but brought my BP into the normal range.
I have been drug free - HBP drugs for about 8 months now.
Check with your doctor before you alter your eating habits and before you start an exercise program...
Also you might what to check out a liver cleanse... I did the Wild Rose Liver Cleanse, that is how I kick started my weight loss...

I've heard it can cause dry mouth, nausea, heartburn, dizziness, impaired ability to operate a motor vehicle, loss of sexual desire, and an erection lasting for more than four hours. You should see your doctor if you experience feelings of euphoria or an urge to listen to Barry Manilow. Other than that, I think they are perfectly safe.

depends on the cause -talk to your doctor. diet, exercise, and stress reduction help; but, not if the cause is genetics.
