Questions about Neuralgia?

Does anyone have this or know someone who does? Mother just went to the Dr. today and he thinks this is what she has. We have to wait for them to do some test to be sure. I tried finding info on it, but its all kinda confusing. I dont understand exactly what it is.

thank you

Update:

She's had a constant headache for going on 2 MONTHS now!!! I think they should have done a CAT scan along time ago. Its not one of your regular headaches either. Its debilitating. She cant sleep. She usually doesnt stop at all during the day. She just goes and goes. So this is really really hurting her.

    Hello~

My daughter was close to getting this diagnosis but fortunately the cause for the neuro pain was found and she is starting to walk again.

It was severe B-12 deficiency. Her blood test for vitamin B-12 showed in the normal range but fortunately she has an amazing doctor that looked further. First he did a test that showed a very high result that indicated a vitamin deficiency problem and then did an intracellular blood test that showed the B-12 was not absorbing into the cells and being distributed in her system.

It has taken 3 months of B-12 shots 3 times a week but the proof has been in the pudding. She is getting better!!

Obviously I don't know if this could be the case for your mother but it would be a good idea to check into it. If it is the case, it's an easy fix.

From what I understand, there are various reasons for B-12 deficiency. Even if someone is getting plenty in their diet, some people just can't absorb it appropriately so over time nerves start to degenerate and become very painful.

In my daughter's case, the cause was disseminated Lyme disease and several of the co-infections. It made the diagnosis complicated for obvious reasons.

If your Mom does get the Neuralgia diagnosis, I highly recommend to keep looking for other causes while treating the Neuralgia. You didn't say where her neuro pain is but I'm assuming it is in a specific area? Does she have any other symptoms?

You might want to google differential diagnosis of Neuralgia too and see if she can relate to any of those.

I know how horribly painful and debilitating neuro pain can be so I hope she can get some answers soon and feel better. .

    Best wishes~

*****Edit: I walked away from my computer and then posted and then read you additional note..are you sure the possible diagnosis the doctor is considering is neuralgia for headache? If it is, I think she might need a new doctor....

I think neuralgia is when someone has pain symptoms that doctors can find no cause for. There is an article link below:

    ADD

I hope your mom get's better.

I think you're right, they should have done something about it a long time ago. If only to rule out any possibilities.

I hope she's ok though Candymom.

I had an uncle who had this diagnosed. Luckily, he paid attention to a comment made by a friend of his; chinese accupuncture. Although the issue persists to this date, accupuncture has had good results alliviating pain, inflamation of the nerve, and usually lasts well over a month...........and it costs a fraction. Hope you can try and good luck.

to me it sounded that it's not the pain receptors causing pain but the changes of the internal pain receptor structure.. but it sounds a lot like what Mikey said, if they can't diagnose pain it's their last ditch diagnosis, and obviously it wouldn't respond well to pain meds cuz they really don't know what they're aiming at!!

    good luck to your mom!!
