Helmet-vey: When you were a little kid, did you wear a helmet when you rode your bike?
I grew up in the olden days when we didn't have helmets. I think today's kids are too overprotected when it comes to stuff like this. So what if the kid wipes out on her bike and gives herself a concussion?
I turned out just fine.

I didn't, and I don't make my daughter wear one. I worry it would make her hair all sweaty and stringy. Concussions make you stronger.

I never wore them either, but on motorcycles I have done both. and I am glad I wore one riding my old roommates bike. she has these things that clenched the feet so the feet wouldn't fall off of the pedals. Stupid if you ask me. Well, I was riding to an interview, and it was downhill. At the bottom of the hill was construction. There was zero way to stop and I couldn't get my feet off the pedals so I knew i was going to flip with my feet still attached. I did this about 5 times in gravel and god only knows what else and finally stood up a bloody mess. I walked the bike to the interview and the manager took one look at me and said you really want this job don't you? I said yes. She said when can you start? I answered...today! I was hired even covered in blood and my outfit shredded from asphalt burn.

My first bike, that I bought my self with babysitting money. Weighed about 25 lbs. My sister would ride on the handle bars and one of my little brothers would be on the back fender. Our big worry was someones foot getting caught in the chain. Or the bubble gum cards falling off. Hanging out all night in the summer was magical. Poor kids there days. No clue what fun is.

I'm from the stone age too. We didn't have helmets, knee pads, goggles, ear plugs, mouth guards, elbow pads or the internet.
Helmets are nerdy *sorry* and I have a hard time making my little kids wear them.
We also played outside until the street lights came on, walked to the liquor store to bring in our soda bottles for change and bought candy with that money.
Mom and Dad took us three kids to the parties they went to, and left us to sleep in the car in the driveway (every once in a while they'd come out and check on us)
One more thing: We didn't have seatbelts in the back seat. Babies didn't have carseats. When my parents finally got a station wagon we'd fill up the back with children. For that matter, when it came to pick up trucks; all the kids and the dogs rode in the back.
I like to think I turned out fine. Hefty, and big busted, but fine.

Helmet? Nah! We never wore them! I can't even imagine the ridicule you'd get from wearing them. We used to ride our bikes on these quarter pipes of dirt that went up 8-10 feet. Yea we crashed, and got hurt once in awhile, but nothing big.

We're the same age and nope, I didn't wear a helmet. Some parents today would wrap their kids in bubble plastic if they could. Generation of whiners coming right up!

I never wore a helmet when I rode a bike, or knee or elbow pads when I used to skate board. I didn't want to look like a dork.....
I turned out pretty spiffy...

Girl - me too; old school - we don't need no stinkin' helmets. My goodness, tho, we did some stupid sh*t. True story: we built a ramp, and played Evel Kneivel with our bikes - except we jumped over a row of other kids layin' down in front of the ramp!! I kid you not!! LOL

For the first few years when I still fell at least once a year, yes. Then I stopped using them. The only thing that I got was a scraped elbow, and that was a few years after I stopped falling.

I remember when I was growing up and the brakes failed on my bike while I was going down a steep hill . I hit a pot hole (it was a dirt road) and flipped over the handlebars. I only got a little brain damage from it. LOL

the only people that wore helmets were those silly BMX kids.
I crashed once and got knocked out for a while, I got kinda pissed when I found out that when you have someone with a head injury and loss of conciousness you NEVER let them sleep, and that's just what my mom did...
no wonder my short-term memory sucks, but hey... I'm still alive and I lookd damn cool on my schwinn
