I have many fictional heroes that I relish, but if I had to pick one it would probably be Batman. I think out of all the superheroes he is the most relatable character, because he is a mere mortal, with no super human powers like Superman, the Incredible Hulk, or Spiderman. I have an affinity for Batman because his survival and success is mostly dependent on his own grit, wit, and utter determination. Nothing was bequeathed to him by right of some environmental circumstance or physical aberration, as is the case with the aforementioned superheroes.

Batman, in short, is the most like us, and therefore he gives us an inkling into the possibility of us emerging from our own tragic circumstances to be something more than ordinary. He is far from a perfect moral character, who, unlike Superman - who is almost God like - must struggle with his own humanity. Batman, especially in his latest Dark Night incarnation, seems to teeter on the edge between sanity and insanity, between doing the right thing or being Machiavellian in his approach to seeking justice. I like this internal conflict, because it is precisely this conflict that most of us face.

He also illuminates another facet of heroism that I think the other popular fictional heroes don’t seem to highlight. He illustrates that heroism is seldom an autonomous effort. The feats that Bruce Wayne pulls off, as Batman, are the result of his friendship and connections with the likes of Commissioner Gordon and his butler Alfred. Too often, we, especially in western culture, tend to look at superheroes as if they are lone wolves, who are capable of doing their heroic deeds without the assistance of others. Batman seems to emphasize that most dramatic heroic actions require the synergy of multiple talents.

So in short, the reason why I favor Batman, over other popular fictional heroes is because he embodies a realism that we can empathize with. He demonstrates, in a bit of an exaggerated sense, the heroic potential in us all.
