What to do for old dog?

He's almost 16. Border collie/Norweigen Elkhound.

His days are getting numbered lately. I've switched his food.

Update:

My man takes care of him here on the farm. He came to me, told me Bear quit eating his commercial dog food, how many days I don't know. I went out to check on Bear, he was just laying there, kind of lethargic(he can't hear anymore). He'd lost some weight too. I boiled a pound of hamburger, feed him half a pound morning & evening. It's perked him up, just wondering if there is anything else I could do. Should I be giving him aspirin?

Update 2:

allycmw: I know when to have the vet make a farm call. I'm asking about care & feeding until then.

I myself am an owner of an older dog.

The best thing you can do is love him just the same. Too many people give up on their senior canine citizens wayyyy to quickly.

    Never take them for granted!

Well ... what was the food switching for? What's wrong with him? Do you mean should you put him down? I'm not sure what you're asking ... if you believe his quality of life is still good (that is, he's still walking/moving around without pain or difficulty, eating and drinking, mentally aware and still generally in good condition), then what's the problem? Enjoy him for as long as he's got left. If he's deteriorating, speak to a vet about possible treatment or euthanasia.
