Define gluten-free? I know it's a buzz word in the health world now. Is it healthier, or only for medical reasons?

Gluten is the protein in wheat, rye, barley, spelt and a few other closely related grains. It's not in corn, rice, or oats, although oats are mostly contaminated during processing, so you would need to buy ones that are certified gluten free (meaning they were processed in a gluten free environment).
Almost all processed food contains gluten for one reason or other: thickening, flavor (as malt), as a binder, or as a major ingredient in eg. pizza, pasta, cakes, cookies, bread. It's also used to stop stuff sticking together, like pre-packed grated cheese, and to extend ingredients so as to make the product easier to measure in the home (baking powder). It's used in many pharmaceuticals and also in makeup and household products.
Celiacs and non-celiac gluten intolerants can't eat even a speck of gluten (anything over 20 parts per million) without causing themselves serious short term and long term health problems. Long term is stuff like bowel cancer, alzheimer's, gluten ataxia (very much like Parkinson's disease), short term ranges from headaches and brain fog, psychosis to pains in the joints, diarrhea, constipation or just indigestion and/or GERD etc.
Autism seems in many cases to be a dietary problem. Many families have discovered that by omitting gluten, casein (a similar protein in milk products), soy and some other things they can help their kids to normalize to a great extent, enabling them to interact with other kids and do their school studies more easily.
Gluten intolerance is much more common than people realize. To find out if you may be gluten intolerant, you could try taking this 5-question multiple choice quiz: http://www.amiglutenintolerant.com/
The questions in the quiz will also give you some more information on conditions and symptoms associated with gluten intolerance.

It means that something that is "gluten-free" is completely free of ingredients derived from gluten-containing cereals: wheat (including kamut and spelt), barley, rye, and triticale, as well as the use of gluten as a food additive in the form of a flavoring, stabilizing or thickening agent. Additionally, the diet may exclude oats. A gluten-free diet is recommended amongst other things in the treatment of celiac disease and wheat allergy, like what other people mentioned.

If you want to eat truly healthy, lose body fat consistently, normalize your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, prevent cancer, and even boost your brain health and energy levels, you may have heard all over the news that the Paleo Diet has been found to be one of the best methods of achieving all of these benefits compared to any other popular "fad" diets out there. Go here https://tinyurl.im/aHMCN
The truth is that the Paleo Diet will never be considered a fad because it's just simply the way that humans evolved to eat over approximately 2 million years. And eating in a similar fashion to our ancestors has been proven time and time again to offer amazing health benefits, including prevention of most diseases of civilization such as cancer, heart disease, alzheimers, and other chronic conditions that are mostly caused by poor diet and lifestyle. One of the biggest misunderstandings about the Paleo Diet is that it's a meat-eating diet, or a super low-carb diet. This is not true

A protein that is found in cereal grains such as wheat, rye, barley, spelt, and kamut, but NOT in rice, quinoa, corn, buckwheat, or millet. It is a more common allergen than most people are aware of. The condition in which the body creates an immune response to products containing gluten is called Celiac disease.

I will try to keep it simple. Your metabolism is basically the rate at which your body burns calories to create energy. So the faster your metabolism, the faster you burn calories and the easier it is to lose unwanted weight. To boost your metabolism naturally you just need to eat the right foods.
You can sit down and literally eat a 1,000-calorie dinner and yet be absolutely starving just a few hours later and the reason is simple: Because your body didnt get what it needed in those 1,000 calories so it sends signals to your brain telling you to ingest more calories and thus, the late-night cravings. That means that the surest way to end those late-night cravings and keep your weight loss goals on track is to eat a more balanced, nutritious diet that actually gives your body what it needs.
It's VERY EASY to lose weight if you eat the right foods. Check out this video here: http://www.sexyjese.com/ - it will blow your mind.
