depends on what your needs are...

landline service is good for data transmissions - fax machines, dial up modems, alarm systems, satellite boxes... and for use when the power goes out... there are many diffrent local providers, shop around, as they are licensed by state... the RBOC is the regional bell company (verizon, att, frontier etc.) whoever owns the wiring outside... but you may get a better price by going thru a reseller...

VoIP is good for price for a fixed line.... however the quality is not always the best.. depending on your internet connection, and your LAN... the best QoS for VoIP service is the service provided by your broadband internet provider since they can control the QoS while the call is traveling over there network, it is also however the most expensive of the VoIP services... with multiple lines VoIP can save significant amount of money, however, there is a single point of failure, if the internet or power goes down you lose all of your phone lines...

for cellular, it depends on what is important to you...

if you plan on traveling internationally, you should purchace an unlocked GSM phone, and get service with a GSM provider (tmob, ATT)

if data is important to you, then you may want to go with a CDMA carrier that has an EVDO network (sprint, verizon)

if you are not a heavy user of your cell phone minutes, then net 10 will likely be your best option it costs only 10 cents per minute...

if you plan on using your cell phone minutes frequently, or want your cell to replace your landline, then I would recommend boost mobile unlimited ($50) i think tmob or virgin also just came out with a $50 unlimited plan, but it does not include data.... i recommend staying away from metro pcs.. there are alot of hidden fees, and other poor business practices....

I have a motorola rizr z3. T-mobile sevice. I like my phone, it can hold alot of songs, which is good cuz i love music. Takes great pics. I like the style, its a slider. It's kinda falling apart, the buttons are falling out. It ain't my fault, they used some type of sticky substance to hold down the navigational button and the middle button to the phone. The middle button is somewhere, who knows? I can do without that. Do you know how many times the navigational button has gone missing? I have to tear down the place to look for the piece of button! T-mobile is expensive, i don't know about other services. T-mobile is all i know and i cant wait for my contract to finish. My rant is over now lol
