Do both theists and atheists feel the need to save the other?
My theory is that Theists (Christians especially) feel that they should do what they can to save atheist souls from Hell, by converting them.
But I also feel, as an atheist, that I should help Christians to rationalise and become atheists (or at least step away from fundamentalism) in order to stop them wasting their lives on false pretences.
To be honest, I would say the majority of the insults were thrown by atheists, claiming theists to be blind to the truth and ignorant.
But really, can we expect Theists to listen to our views when none of us would be willing to listen to them quoting bible verses as truth.
So my question, to both atheists and theists do you see R&S as a chance to help people see (your interpretation of) the truth? Or simply a challenge to belittle the other group?

I've never thought about it that way actually.. From all the talk on here you'd think that Atheists and Theists hate each other, but they're actually trying to help one another..

As an atheist I don't care what anyone else believes, since the majority of the population these days seem far more concerned with trying to pretend they're in an LA street gang than listening to sense...
I used to invite Jehovah witnesses into my home on a regular basis, the same fella kept coming round and we'd talk for hours. I liked him, but he couldn't half spout some rubbish. He tried to tell me that there are more atoms in the human body than the rest of the universe put together once...
The only time I've seen less informed salesmanship was in PCWorld!!

I dont believe in any Hell type place ... so I have nothing to save people from
yes I am a theist , but I also am of the opinion that you can only believe what makes sense to you
live a good life , do as much good as you can
other than that
I couldnt care less what label you do it under

I'm an atheist but i say live and let live. I don't push my views on anyone else and i would expect others to do the same. Its people on either side who have to constantly proclaim their beliefs and say anyone who disagrees is ignorant/going to hell etc that annoy me.
Why can't people accept that there simply isn't one correct answer to the question of life, the universe and everything. Every bodies views are equally valid as there is no valid evidence for or against either argument.

Im an Atheist but I have an interest in some religions.
I have family and friends wrapped up in the JW clan and of course I would like to save them from the false teachings etc..but it is their choice.
As for the rest of them I couldn't give a toss...they will know when they die that they were wrong
Or will they, since when you die you are dead and dead people know nothing?

In the first and third scenarios I would kill the one to save the five. In the second scenario, I admit I wouldn't push the fat man, even though it would be one person for five. It feels closer to being murder than the other scenarios. I think because in the other scenarios the action is to get out of the way of the five tied people (which unfortunately results in the death of another) while in the second scenario my action is to deliberately push a man under the wheels of the trolley.

Theists believe there is a God. Religion is what we do about it. Of the world's largest religions, Christianity and Islam actively seek to recruit new members because their founders told them to. Judaism and Hinduism are less bothered.
Atheists believe there is no God. There are also hedonists who deny God and claim to be atheist. Here's how you tell the difference. Everyone who has answered this question saying that there is no God and that religion is rubbish, are not atheists, but God deniers desperately trying to justify their hedonistic lifestyle. They know that they have an eternity of Hell to look forward to and are rather annoyed about it. Atheists wouldn't even bother to read the question.

I personally see it as a chance to help others see the truth.
Sadly, there are some in both camps (theists & atheists) who get a thrill out of belittling their fellow brothers and sisters who do not agree with their viewpoint. In my opinion, I think it is even sadder to see it in the Christian camp, since they are supposed to be like Christ (hence the name Christian), and Christ would never try to make anyone feel worthless.
I personally believe everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their personal beliefs. That is exactly how Christ treated all with whom He came into contact, with dignity and with respect. We are created in His image. So when someone is treated with disrespect, it not only wrongs the victim, but also disrespects God in Whose image we are created.

I'd prefer to save these children's lives from theists:

Apart from that, I prefer a secular society where debate is open. Lies, ignorance and superstitions crumble in an open society. What remains is hopefully the less harmful aspects of religion.

Christians feel the need to knock at my door and save me. Which wont work as i don't need saving. I have no need to save the christians as they have made their own bed and they can bloody well lie in it!!
