Oregonians---is it true there is no self-serve Gas?

Someone from Oregon told me that in her state they do not have "self-serve" gas stations, but they all have attendants to pump the gas (like most of the US in the 1950's and 1960's)---can anyone in Oregon tell about this? Or explain why?

thanks a bunch

Yes, you are correct. Oregon is one of two states (New Jersey being the other) where you can not pump your own gas.

This goes back to an old law passed in 1951 for "safety" reasons to name a few.

People have tried to have this changed over the years, but it never passes.

One good thing (my wife likes) is when it's raining (as it often does here in the NW) you don't have to get out of your car.

Bad thing is you have to wait for the attendant to get to your car (if there is a lot) and then you have to wait until he gets back when the pump stops pumping. This can take a long time, especially if you are going to a popular station at peak times. I have had it take as long as 20 min. to get gas and leave!

Since I live in Washington and work in Oregon the "Pros & Cons" are constantly changing. It all depends on the price and convenience factor.

    Crazy!

This is true. In Oregon it is against the law to pump your own gas. I am not sure why, but it is nice to not have to get out of your car. You just pull up and the attendant comes up too the car, you tell them how much you want and they pump it for you. Its does keep our gas prices a little higher, but not by much.

Self serve - i do no longer think of we even have finished serve gas stations around here from now on. Congratulations!!! Answering your question has introduced me to point six! You win an all expenses paid trip to the Bahamas! ok... i'm mendacity bearing directly to the trip... yet how some vast call?

yep, it's all true.. We do it for safety, to employee people, and cause Oregonians (esp. the natives here) We like to have it pumped for us esp. on those icky days.

There are however a few chain gas stations for emergency vehicles or government vehicles (even some truck companies)to pump their own gas (esp. when our gas stations close roughly around midnight)..They swip their card and away they go.

Born and raised in the state and I never saw a self serve station. But if your a trucker and carry a card like a "CFN" or Pac Pride card you can pump your own. Or if you pump Diesel is legal to pump your own in Oregon... thats it I beleive.

When I lived there, I heard two reasons for it: safety and keeping more people employed by requiring attendants.
