Do you remember Grandmother's apron?
The History of 'APRONS'
I don't think our kids know what an apron is.
The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, because she only had a few,it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and they used less material, but along with that, it served as a potholder for
removing hot pans from the oven.
It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.
From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.
When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.
And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms.
Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.
Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.
From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.
In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.
When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.
When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner..
It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that ' old-time apron' that served so many purposes.
Send this to those who would know (and love) the story about Grandma's aprons.
REMEMBER:
Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool.
Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw.
They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron.
I don't think I ever caught anything from an apron.

thank you! What a great reminder of my childhood. My grandmother passed away a few years ago and I remember her wearing the apron, cooking pies and giving lots of hugs.
What a nice post on Mothers Day weekend. We certainly miss the simpler times of our youth:).... and for me, I miss my wonderful Grandmother... I love you Grandma Mary.

I have some aprons that I find in shops in the city. I have two 'Christmas' aprons and 3 for everyday. I am a messy cook and I look a mess too. That is why I bought the aprons. I also know a woman who makes them but she wants 25 dollars each. The ones I have were under 12 dollars. Poppy

I always get flour on my clothes when I knead and bake bread or pizza dough, have an old apron for that, and grandmas used to make bread nearly every day. I remember farm wives wiping their brow with the hem of their dresses, just to keep the sweat out of their eyes, an apron would have been better. I've got a pattern for aprons and think I'll make a couple out of fabric I have kept. I just loved those old-timey ones with pockets and ruffles and some had bibs too. The last one I made was from pink gingham and I cross-stitched a wide border on it with red thread.

I guess I am just an old fashioned grandma.
When my kids were little, I used my apron for many of those things too. I also used it to not only wipe tears away. but for runny noses too.
Nothing wrong with that until- company came -
The kids had grown enough to know, they could just grab up a corner and blow...
I sure got some dirty looks! lol!

I remember my grandmother's apron in Italy, ( I was born and raised there) she used to wear it on holidays, special occasions, and when she went to church.
It was a shiny, black satin apron, smaller than her everyday ones, it had all cut-out details and embroidery all around. I loved that apron. I still think about it from time to time. I must have been about 5-6 years old.
Thanks for bringing back memories.

Mine wore one all the time, anyway in the kitchen.. sometimes the type that went around your neck. My mom had aprons, but never wore them. Mom has all the old aprons still, put away.

That's nice and brought back some memories. I do remember my Grandma always wore and apron when she was working in the kitchen. We stopped at my mother-in-laws the other day and she was wearing and apron she was working in her kitchen, she is 94 years young.

What a sweet question, yes I do and she is still alive and very much in my life. My maternal family is native American, and cooking seems to be a commonality they all share.
The funny think is, as you posted a beautifully descriptive Q is that STAINS were and are part of the process, No StARCHED linen things, well won, used cover ups.
Hugs on you.
