Why don't people use correct grammar and spelling?

I would say these:

1) Some don't know any better.

2) Some have lousy typing skills

3) Some are using the same style they'd use when sending texts.

4) Some want to seem cool, and using other spellings is a "radical" thing to do.

5) Some figure it's okay because "people will know what I mean, so what's the big deal?"

6) Some are indeed non-native speakers.

Anybody else?

I agree. It's sad, isn't it?

Most of the people who don't use correct grammar and spelling don't use it because they don't know what that is. MANY kids today simply have no idea how to write and spell. (Actually, it's not just the kids... a lot of adults do not have those skills either.)

And here's the bad news... it's only going to get worse. All this 'text messaging' by today's kids is not helping matters any. Want to guarantee yourself a good job in ten or fifteen years? Become an editor!

Right now, on moviefone.com, a major website, you can find this sentence:

Weather your new , casual, or a full blown "Trekkie" or "Trekker"; Moviefone/AOLTV bring you 'Star Trek' features galore guranteed to make any day feel like a trip to deep space.

I simply can't get over that sentence! It's amazing! How many errors in that sentence can YOU find? Let's count 'em...

Weather should be whether.

Your should be you're.

Guranteed should be guaranteed.

There should NOT be a semicolon after 'Trekker.'

A comma (or a dash) is needed after the word 'galore.'

Full blown should almost certainly be full-blown.

There is an unnecessary space between the word 'new' and the comma.

AOLTV should probably be AOL TV.

Did I miss any?

This isn't the first time I've seen these types of errors on moviefone.com. I think they have a 3rd grader editing or writing for them.

My biggest pet peeve is the four-letter word 'lose.' Why do so many people spell this word wrong? I see questions everyday, right here on Yahoo, asking for help to 'loose' weight.

I just think a lot of young people today don't realize how important it is. I also find it really hard to take anyone who can't use correct spelling and grammar seriously. It just makes them look ignorant and outright stupid. I also blame schools - our daughter's teacher (at a private school,even - what are we paying for?) makes spelling errors such as using weather instead of whether (as in "whether or not"), comma splices, and confusing their, they're, and there! It's appalling.

I completely agree. The education system in this country is to blame for much of it. They do not teach proper English these days.

i have a condition called bibliophobia which makes me feel anxious when I read and write. When i was small I needed glasses but they thought i was stupid and couldn't read.

they are lazy and tend to think they are cool when they don't use correct language or spelling because you don't expect it.....but now you do expect it so the level that you should have on your vocabulary has gone down... (sorry for any of my mistakes if there are and there pobably are some)

People don't write anymore. They may learn the skills at school but forget them because they are never used. Apostrophe errors are my pet hate...

True. Some people think that they bacome cool if they speal slang or don't mispronouncing.something. i find it hard to understand and it's so annoying.
