What should I look for when buying a new computer?

I don't know much about computers but I am looking to buy a new desktop from Dell. I want to be able to store music and movies on it and I especially want to be able to play games such as the Sims 3. My budget is $1000 or less. (OS=Vista)

1)What size of hard drive to get?

2)How much memory to get?

3) What type of processor is best?

I don't know much about these so any help is greatly appreciated.

Update:

A little extra information..

~Sims 3 Minimum Requirements~

FOR WINDOWS VISTA

* 2.4 GHz P4 processor or equivalent

* 1.5 GB RAM

* A 128 MB Video Card with support for Pixel Shader 2.0

* Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 1

* At least 6.1 GB of hard drive space with at least 1 GB of additional space for custom content and saved games

For computers using built-in graphics chipsets under Windows, the game requires at least:

* Intel Integrated Chipset, GMA 3-Series or above

* 2.6 GHz Pentium D CPU, or 1.8 GHz Core 2 Duo, or equivalent

* 0.5 GB additional RAM

    Well you don't say if you need to get a monitor and speakers. If not you can get a lot more computer with your 1,000. Don't forget, Windows 7 will be out in around 5 months. Don't know if you want to wait.

    Get a 64 bit OS Vista

    Get Quad-core 2.5 GHz

    4GB DDR3 at 1066MHz

    500GB hard drive, if you have enough money go for 750gb

    256mb video card

    This would be fast, but it's might be over your budget. You can save by going with 2.3 GHz processor

    the 500GB hard drive.

    Hard drive

    If you plan on storing a lot of music CD's and movies, you'll want to go large. 1 song = 3~4MB, so if 1 CD = 10 songs = 30~40MB, 100 CD's = around 4GB. 1 movie = about 8GB. 20 movies = 160GB. Best to get a hard drive in the 500~640GB range for the system and a 1 TB external drive for storage.

    Memory

    If your getting the 32bit version of Vista, the max memory that os can utilize is 3~3.5GB. The 64bit version can use up to 120GB, but you won't need that, 4~6GB will be plenty.

    Processor

    For modern games, a 2.4GHz or better dual core will handle any game out there. But, as with anything, the more the better. Quad cores are good, but have no clear advantage over dual cores when it comes to gaming. Although there will be more in the future, there are currently only a handful of games available that are coded for quad cores.

    Here's one possible Dell system-

    You can order it with more memory, but it's cheaper to add it yourself. Youtube has videos on "how to install pc memory", also for graphics cards, power supplies,etc. if you need them.

    You can use the system for gaming and multimedia and get a 1TB external hard drive for storing your music and movies for as little as $110.

    1.) 500 GB should be good

    2.) RAM = 3GB

    3.) I prefer AMD but Intel is fine too
