Hey Bayside,
I was actually looking up this information recently too! There are two main ways of becoming a pro (in the literal sense of the word - play on the Pro Tour):
1. Play through the PGA Tour Q-school (qualifying school). This is essentially a three-stage tournament in which the top 25 finishers get a "tour card" and obtain eligibility to play on the Tour. There's a $4,000 entry fee for Q-school.
2. Play in the Nationwide Tour and win 3 events or finish in the top 15 on the money list.
Either way, you need to be in the top 125 on the "Money List" or win a tournament on Tour to keep your card for the following year (so you don't have to repeat Q-school for example). Good luck, see you on the course!

To be a pro at a golf course you need to first contact your local Sectional PGA Office and sign up for a PAT (Player Ability Test). Then you have to pass the test which is a 36 hole tournament with a target score that you have to shoot or better. Then you have to go through 3 levels of books and some checkpoints and a few classes. after spending $1200 or more you will be a pro.
To be a tour pro you can qualify for a PGA event if it has an open qualifier and then play very well and win enough money to change your status form an amature to a pro.
Or you could go through Q school.

you are considered a pro as soon as you accept any money as a reward for golf
example win 100 dollars for a hole in one you are a pro and can no longer compete as an amateur
and anyone who gets paid to give lessons can call themselves a pro
the other answers are to be a PGA certified pro

The two answers are correct. Had you been more specific as to the qualifying for the club professional or the playing professional , you would have had one proper answer.
