ps3 game plays ps1/ps2 games?
I have all of the old crash bandicoot games and I want a ps3, will the games work on the ps3? plus do ps2 games work on a ps3?
Thanks.
I think I read on wikipedia that they made an update some time in 2007 for the ps3 to be compatible with ps1 or ps2 games... and what does everyone mean by: the new ps3's have 2 usb ports and the old versions had 4? What difference does it make?

I take it I'm going to be answering this question forever too:
backward compatibility for the PS3 with PS2 games is as follows:
20GB (4 USB slots, no longer in production) - yes
60GB (4 USB slots, no longer in production) - yes
80GB with 4 USB slots (no longer in production, bundled with MGS4 or Motor Storm) - yes
40GB (2 USB slots, no longer in production) - NO
80GB with 2 USB slots - NO
160GB (2 USB slots) - NO
any other up coming PS3's - NO
in short: if it has 4 USB slots, yes. if it has 2 USB slots, no.
all PS3s play PS1 games.

the download that others may refer to is for backwards compatible PS3s ONLY!!!!!!!!!!! a download will NOT make a non-backwards compatible PS3 play PS2 games. PERIOD!
"If a PLAYSTATION 3 is not backward compatible, you will not be able to add this function through any hardware (i.e., changing the hard disk drive) or software (i.e., updates, homebrew) upgrades or modifications. "
that came DIRECTLY from Sony's own website: http://playstation.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/playstatio...

ANY PS3 will play PS1 games...although there may be some compatibility issues
PS2 games can only be played on the 60GB, 20GB and old 80GB version of the console (one that was out at the same time as the 20GB most likely have 4 USB ports) unfortunately there is nothing that can be done to the newer models to allow them to play the games as the hardware that supports this feature was removed. However the PSN is constantly being updated with classic PS1/2 games that you can download unfortunately this means you will have to pay for them again but if you sold your original copy you might get the money to buy it as they normally cost around £7 (dunno of US or other countries prices)

All PS3s can play PS1 games, but no current PS3 model can play PS2 games.
If you want a PS3 that can play PS2 games, you'll have to buy a used PS3 of one of the following models:
20GB PS3
60GB PS3
80GB PS3 (prior to Aug 2008)
Note that the 20 & 60GB PS3 are preferred as they came with actual PS2 hardware and are able to play PS2 games much better. The 80GB model uses a software emulator, and can't play as many PS2 games.

Only PS3 versions with 4 USBs will play PS2 games (20GB, 60GB and old 80GB versions which aren't in production anymore). Newer versions with 2 USBs (40GB, new 80GB and 160GB versions) don't play them at all and unfortunately there is nothing to be done with this issue.

i have been told by people on yahoo and also on game.com that the 40g and 80g ps3 does not have the backwards compatibility with ps2 games so im certain the ps1 games wont work either.
the 60g ps3 used to have the backwards compatibility but they dont sell that in stores no more. you could probably get one off ebay but i would be careful with buying them on sites like that incase their faulty.
