Is this why Americans are so desensitized to the deaths of civilians in Afghanistan & Iraq?
The US media reports incidents such as last week's massive attack on civilians in western Afghanistan with such headlines as “Civilian Deaths Imperil Support for Afghan War” (New York Times, 5/7/09), “Claim of Afghan Civilian Deaths Clouds U.S. Talks” (Wall Street Journal, 5/7/09). If all they are concerned about is the damage to US prestige & goals, then is it any wonder that civilian deaths are treated with such disdain by the US public?

This is an issue which no American politician wants to discuss or talk about. There have been more than 650,000 civilian deaths in Iraq and more than 300,000 civilian deaths in Afghanistan, these are the official figures, actual figures especially in Afghanistan are much higher. I don't know why the Americans are not sensitive to the issue, they should be but don't seem to care.

It doesn't matter. No matter if we care, or don't care, it's not going to change a damn thing. It's still in the best interests of the US government to be over there, so the bombs will keep dropping whether we want it to or not.
It doesn't "bother" me, since I understand that war is a dirty, ugly and vile business, non-combatants will be killed and maimed, and the media will downplay it because they've been told to do so...It doesn't matter, since it will all continue until it's decided that it no longer serves US interests, and then it will stop, and not a moment before.
Anything said or done by US citizens is just useless posturing. I guess some like to protest since it makes them feel better, because they are "Doing Something", and some like to support so they can feel better about "Being Patriotic", but it all just comes down to useless posturing that does nothing but make the person posturing feel better.

No. It's way simpler than that.
Americans know two relevant essential facts:
1- The Islamists deliberately mingle with civilians SO they'll be killed.
2- They ARE civilians, so even if there were NO collateral casualties, those killed are still ALWAYS called "civilians" by most news outlets.

I don't think people are desensitized to the civilian deaths. The terrorists intentionally stay with civilians. Its the way they operate. They think it is their best hope of hiding and surviving. Its their choice of warfare not ours. It would help if the people were capable of defending their homes from these predators so they would never become targets. We can't allow these people to get nukes at any cost or the civilian death toll will be millions instead of a few. I understand that a few are very unique and I empathize. But a nuke would kill millions all over the world from the fallout as well as the initial blast.
Do you think the terrorists are civilians? I'm not sure what it will take to convince people that this is a war. These terrorists kill their own people with suicide bombs. Is this our fault?

for the past 6 years the Republican warmongers have assured us that terrorists disguise themselves as civilians and that anyone who opposes killing terrorists are terrorist-lovers
