Imagine an ant walking round the perimeter of the polygon.

Every time it comes to a vertex, it has to turn through the exterior angle.

After walking round the complete perimiter it has turned through 360 degrees.

So if the exterior angle is 40 degrees, the number of sides is 360/40 = 9.

if you are given a measure you divide 360 by that number and that is the number of sides. so if it is 40 the polygon would have 9 sides.
