How to completely disable windows media player from running in windows xp?
I have restricted users from running windows media player using Group Policy (direct access using double click). but unfortunately the users got smarter trying to use the "Open with command" on right click context menu. I have removed the command using Regedit. but the users got even smarter
now the users are using the "Change" (file association) button on the Properties Windows (right click context menu - General Tab) and change the association to Internet Explorer and the #$#$% windows media player is still running !!! suprisingly!!!
My question is how do i disable this function?
1) I have done the registry settings
2 )the user does not have any access to download files (video softwares) it is blocked by firewall (using user IP address)
3) besides uninstalling the software coz for the user login it is disabled for administrator login it will be enabled

You could try uninstalling Windows Media Player so the older version automatically comes on in its place. Windows Media Player 9 is extremely unattractive both visually and in use in comparison to later versions

Hi 'all_purpose_white_guy' (I like your handle!) : Sounds like you've got one of those slow moving PCs. Me too ! Try running your "Disk Defragmenter". Delete all your cookies. Manually search through your computer for programs that you never use and DELETE them. Open a file called 'Temp' and delete all those EMPTY folders. After deleting your cookies, have a look at the same file, where your cookies are, and open a bunch of OBJECTS. Delete the objects that mean nothing to you. So, what you'll be doing, is dumping all the excess baggage from your PC. Get to your favourite computer store and buy a MEMORY STICK to increase the PCs memory. Low memory will really slow down your computer. Buy a memory stick with at least 512 MB. Good Luck ! I know the frustrations you're going through.

Uninstall it.
But so many portable application can play multimedia file right now and I think just uninstall it does not good choice. Consider to move Vista , there are lot of feature to handle like this.
