When I was in the service, a fried gave me a puzzle to solve. Is there a solution to it.?

The puzzle was:

One hundred and one by fifty divide

and if a cypher is rightly applied

the answer is one from nine.

I toyed with it for a while and then gave up on it.

    The answer is CLIO

    Using Roman numerals, a hundred and one is CI and fifty is L. Dividing CI by L gives CLI. Add cypher (0) to the right gives the answer: Clio, being the name of one of the nine muses from Greek Mythology.
