That's roughly an 8:00 minutes Mile.
The reason why you can run easier on a treadmill is because your not affected by the "elements" (the outside) and also running on the street is VERY VERY bad for you. You should run on grass!!!
The good thing at that speed is- you can improve really fast.
How to do it faster? Make a schedule such as:
Eat healthy
Stay away from sodas, fast food, chips, energy drinks.
Drink lots of water (I drink over a gallon each day).
To run long, its about getting a pace, it will be hard at first. You needs to get a strict running schedule.
Your first week can look something like this (I run Cross-Country and my week starts Monday and ends Sunday since I am in high school still)
Monday- 3 Miles
Tuesday- 4 Miles
Wednesday- 4 Miles
Thursday- 3 Miles
Friday- 4 Miles
Saturday- 3 Miles
Sunday- 3 Miles
=24 Total Miles
Your 2nd week you can increase his Mileage by 10% =
24+2.4= 26.4 (round up) = 27 Miles. You also should include a "workout day". Workout days increase speed. My workout days are always Wednesday.
Mon.- 4 Miles
Tues.- 5 Miles
Wed.- Run 2 Miles, run 4-6 400meters (timed) at 90 Seconds(CONSISTENCY IS THE KEY! It may seem slow but that's okay 90secondsx4= 360 Seconds= 6 minute Mile) Then run ONLY 1 Mile after (4 Miles Total)
Thurs.- 3 Miles
Fri.- 4 Miles
Sat. 4 Miles
Sun.- 3 Miles
= 27 Miles
Your 3rd week, Increase your Mileage by 10%=
27+2.7=29 (round up) 30 Miles. His work out should be pretty much the same. 90 seconds is the same time. you should aim for that, but he doesn't have to get it, 95 seconds is good too.
Mon.- 4 Miles
Tues.- 4 Miles
Wed.- Run 2 Miles, run 4-6 400meters (timed) at 90 Seconds(CONSISTENCY IS THE KEY!) Run TWO miles after (5 Miles total)
Thurs.- 3 Miles
Fri.- 5 Miles
Sat.- 4 Miles
Sun.- 5 Miles
= 30 Miles
4th Week= DOWN WEEK.. you needs to recover!! Same as 2nd week!
Mon.- 4 Miles
Tues.- 5 Miles
Wed.- Run 2 Miles, run 4-6 400meters (timed) at 90 Seconds(CONSISTENCY IS THE KEY!) Run only 1 mile after (4 Miles Total)
Thurs.- 3 Miles
Fri.- 4 Miles
Sat. 4 Miles
Sun.- 3 Miles
= 27 Miles
Week 5 is 10% of week 3...
30+3.0= 33 Miles
Mon.- 5 Miles
Tues.- 5 Miles
Wed.- Run 2 Miles, run 4-6 400meters (timed) at 90 Seconds(CONSISTENCY IS THE KEY!) Run THREE miles after (6 Miles TOTAL)
Thurs.- 4 Miles
Fri.- 4 Miles
Sat.- 5 Miles
Sun.- 4 Miles
= 33 Total Miles
Now week 6 should be pretty much the same as week 5. You shouldn't increase above 35 Miles your Mileage so fast.. Stay under 35 miles until you leave!!
Week 7 should be same as week 5 and week 6.
Week 8 should be a down week, so your body and recover .. Don't stop running, just run maybe 27 Miles that week. Don't do a workout!
If you notice each Wednesday
You run 2 Miles BEFORE you do a work out
When you do each workout, remember to jog in between 400 meters for about 2 minutes so you can recover!!!!!!!!!
Remember CONSISTENCY is the key!! You should not be running any faster than 90!!!!!
Each work out is about 1 mile-1.5 miles long (400metersx4= 1600meters= 1 mile)
Then you run Some miles after.
REMEMBER!
STRETCHING IS MORE IMPORTANT AFTER RUNNING THAN BEFORE.
To stretch before, jog 2-5 mins before actually running, so you can warm up!!
DRINK WATER!!!
EDIT:
Do not run twice a day!!!
You will tire yourself.
The only time you would do a double day is if you need to run 8+ Miles (and you shouldn't be running that much) or you don't have time to run 5-6 miles...
Best time to run is in the Morning for me
:) Your Husband needs to realize that training isn't about running your fastest but running consistently...
27 mins for 3 miles= 9 min per mile
Aim for that and you will see that you will speed up naturally.
Push yourself if you feel like you want to stop
NEVER WALK.
Always jog/run
Make sure you keep your core (abs, obliques) strong because the Core really keeps your body from hurting when its strong
good luck, hopefully I helped!
EDIT:
With the workouts, 90 seconds is 'fast' because that means you'd be running a 6 min mile pace, so running 95-100 seconds is better.

Hi Matt,
The run in 12 minutes is 8 minutes per mile. That is not a very good time, especially if you are young. To run it faster you have to do three things. First you have to get used to running further than that on a regular basis. Then you have to practice running like 1/4 to 1/2 mile faster than running pace intervals. It is harder to run on a treadmill for me but everyone is different. Maybe because the ground leaves you nothing to hold onto and the pavement or ground is not always even.
If you want a good target time about 9 minutes is good.
Some of the best do it in 7:30 and that would give you max points. If you are under 9 you can be proud of that. Most people though, just hover around the 10-11 minute pace and some (that fail) are in the 13 plus range.
Hope you enjoy this journey in running. You have to have several 3-5 mile runs and then every other day you have to do interval training of faster than pace running. Aerobic and anaerobic running.
**** Luck,
Your assitant

Absolutely... when we were in Rescue Swimmer School, we ran 11-12 miles every MORNING for 6 weeks. THEN we spent the afternoons in the pool swimming 2-3 miles a day. As others point out, marathoners do 26+ miles... so 15 isn't much.

you find it easier because you are not really going anywhere and its not the same at all, its easier to concentrate on running at a good pace as well, you don't have to worry about where you are going as well, my 1.5 mile is like 15 min, but im more of a sprinter, any sort of longish distance i am bad at. Haven't done a 1.5 mile in a while tho and im more used to 1 miles, which i can do in about 7 min, getting my pace right is the hardest part 4 me. Try running on a track, its like a cross between the street and the tread mill.

Depends. How old are you? How long have you been running? When I first started running, I could do 1.5 in about 18 minutes... yeah, not so hot.
To do it faster, run more. Once your body gets used to running, you'll be able to go quicker and increase your stride. Do sprints a couple days a week.
Running on the treadmill is easier because it's perfectly level and it moves you forward, so you have to exert less effort than running on the street. If you run on the treadmill, set it to an incline to be closer to the effort required by street running -- maybe 4 or 5.

No, not a good time. To pass a BPFA you need to run it in under 10:30. Running on a treadmill only seems easier. You actually cover alot more ground and benefit more running outside. I would suggest some interval training to get your time down. Good luck!

1.5 miles in 12 min is not bad but it could be better. Try doing 1/4m sprints. Anything under 11 min is pretty good

Twelve minutes is ok for a starting point. A running machine will get you fit cardio vascularly but it won't do much for building up muscle like road running will. Cardio is fine; but you won't move faster if you don't get stronger.
Bloke directly above me. That's inside world record pace and you're lying your @ss off.

12 minutes is fine for just about anyone, unless you plan on taking the BUD/S screening test or something. Anyways, I too noticed that treadmill running is easier than running on the street, but I don't know nor care why.
Edit- Apparently stupidity is running rampant today. 3 miles in 12 minutes? Hah! Most men in prime shape can't do that. Despite what the gung ho steroid munching freaks here say, 12 minutes for 1 1/2 miles will usually be good enough.
