In the simplest terms equity means ownership. It is usually used to refer to the amount that is actually yours as opposed to the amount that is offset by debts and loans.

Eg your house is worth £200,000 but your mortgage has £150,000 outstanding, so your equity in the house is £50,000.

Or a business has assets of £100,000 but debts of £90,000, so the owner's equity in the business is £10,000.

If the asset was sold and the debts paid off the equity is the amount of cash that you would be left with.

Equity is also used in relation to shares. Your equity in the firm is represented by the number of shares you own.

    What Is Equity In Business

Equity is the ownership you get in a business in exchange for giving that business cash to start, build, and run that business.

If the business is successful, then the profits increase the value of your equity in the business, making you richer for picking that business and that form of investment.

If the business is not successful, then the losses decrease the value of your equity.

In most cases (common) equity also gives you power in the company by giving you the right to vote on who manages the company and how certain business is conducted within the company.

equity is the capital value of a business.i.e. the shares. The value of a busiess in terms of capital owned by the shareholders. It would be the assets less liabilities less any loans.Buying shares or a share would be owning part of the equity. A loan does not constitute equity.

Equity means assets minus liabilities and is located toward the end of the Balance Sheet included with a company's financial statements.

Equity shows what is "left over," the residual interest, in the assets after subtracting liabilities (what the company owes; debt).
