I have a 55 gal tank and use a canister filter. It's nice, but the water's a bit green. When I had my 29 gal tank, I had a whisper 30, but I also bought a Aquaclear 20 and had them both running. The aquaclear had 3 filter thingies to change (some rocks, a sponge, and some charcoal). It was super easy to maintain and my water turned from greenish to crystal clear in 2 days. Having 2 filters going isn't bad for the tank.

Overall, I'd say if you can't find an aquaclear, go with that canister filter. They're pricey, but are pretty efficient.

I'd prefer to go with Eheims, but that's just me.

Instead of the Eheim Ecco, I'd recommend the Eheim Classic 2215 - http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/prod/211164/produc...
