I have a precription for ciprofloxin antibiotic dated October 2005.?

I know that some medications expire but are they sometimes good after the expiration. And, is it that they lose their potency, or does this one specifically, turn into something that may be poisonous to my body.

Update:

The precription was never used. I got it when I was traveling overseas and my doctor prescribed it for me in case I got sick and couldn't get medical attention. I never did need it. I have a tooth infection and I currently have no medical insurance, that is why I am asking.

Throw it out. If you are sick enough to need an antibiotic go to the doctor. People not taking the full prescription when they are sick ( I'm guilty) is what has lead to resistant killer BUGS, like MRSA. Now think of it if you had something in your fridge dated 2005, would you eat it? NO so why would you put that in your mouth and swallow it?

    THROW IT OUT!!!!!!!!!

I would throw them out. I also would not just be taking them because u think u need it. My sinus infections are cipro resistant from being over prescribed. People tend to use antibiotics because they have other symptoms but if an antibiotic is not recommended for a particular disorder then it can cause u problems in the future when u actually need to use the drug. Remember there is a greater chance for resistance because antibiotics are in your body from the foods you eat, i.e. beef, dairy products. Don't add any additional unless it is needed. This is also being seen as the reason why there has been a lot of resistant bugs lately...

Over time drugs lose their effectiveness, and or the chemical composition breaks down. That means they CAN become dangerous. Simply put. Would you eat food that had been in your freezer for four years? I don't think so. Ditch it.

If you have a toothache or an abscess, go the bulk food store and get yourself a bottle of clove oil. A few drops on a cotton ball, placed in or on the aching tooth, will numb it for hours.
