Alchemy is a craft. There wouldn't have been bronze or steel if there hadn't been Alchemists. There wouldn't have been ungents to heal wounds if there hadn't been alchemists. There wouldn't have been modern Chemistry if there hadn't been Alchemy.
Yes, they also searched for immortality and a way to make Gold from lead, but our modern Chemists are still working toward both and they have transmuted one element to another on an atomic level, though not to Gold and make potions that extend life.

I think the more logical question should be where would we be without Alchemy-
Most scholars now concede that Newton (Isaac) was first an foremost an alchemist. It is also becoming obvious that the inspiration for Newton's laws of light and theory of gravity came from his alchemical work.
In fact, Newton -- the revered founder of modern science and the mechanistic universe -- also ranks as one of the greatest spiritual alchemists of all time.
Even the Bible speaks of gaining wisdom...
Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding,...
The Bible, Proverbs 3: 13-20
Therefore I ask the question again..where would we be without the study of alchemy?

I always thought alchemy was where academics tried to change an element into gold. If this is alchemy then yes I think someday people will know enough about the shell model to make elements into other elements including gold.

There are two questions here: both badly framed.
Whats your views on alchemy? The word alchemy is now used to describe fraudulent practices.
do you believe? The eternal question concerning faith in a Supreme Being. A private matter and an impertinent question.

Alchemy is both a philosophy and a practice with an aim of achieving ultimate wisdom as well as immortality, involving the improvement of the alchemist as well as the making of several substances described as possessing unusual properties. The practical aspect of alchemy generated the basics of modern inorganic chemistry, namely concerning procedures, equipment and the identification and use of many current substances.
All modern science tries to achieve this, but has become so complex that we are unable to perceive it as a whole, and are forced to break it down into segments, Physics, chemistry, etc.
And in this context I believe it is real (and its aims are the aims of science)
If you are referring to the mystical aspects,
There is too much in the human archaeology/history that we as advanced humans can not explain or reproduce
As each civilization rises and falls, as much is lost as is gained.
Therefore I must remind you of Arthur.C.Clarkes third law
“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”.

I'm not familiar with alchemy, but I'm sure it's not a 'non-existent' thing or an 'un-real' thing, cause then it wouldnt be so widley known.
Like Witchcraft is deemed as unreal or evil to mainstream people, when it obviously isnt.
Sorry to not help you at all lol...

The transmutation of elements is entirely possible, but not by chemical means. You need a restrictively expensive bit of kit. The LHC would do! Still, the quest for the lapis philisophica gave us chemistry, so we owe the old alchemists something.
