What makes a car an American made car?

If a car company, like GM, is an American corporation but their vehicle is built in another country like Mexico or Canada, are they considered an American car?

If a company, like Toyota, is a company from another country, but the cars are built in the US, are they considered an American car?

In other words, when the unions like the UAW yell that we should buy an American car, which one is right? The one where the workers on the line are from other countries and the corporate big wigs are American, or the one where the workers on the line are American but the corporate big wigs are from another country?

to the UAW an american car is a union built car.

to most of the rest of the world, an american car is a car produced by an american company (GM, Ford, or Chrysler) regardless of the actual production line.

Yeah, that patriotic thing is really overrated. On the other hand, if no one is buying American cars, a major part of the U.S. economy will crash... Not that it hasn't already. But still. Personally, I don't like American cars either. My teacher had an experience where she bought an American car, had it for several years, and absolutely hated those several years. I don't really mind a little bit of outsourcing. It does bring in profit. It's when there's TOO much outsourcing that it begins to look ridiculous... On the other hand, hybrids are coming out in a few years. By then, I guess people will start buying American cars, the money will begin to circulate, and maybe then the Big Three will be somewhat able to catch up to foreign companies like Toyota.

American made doesn't mean what it used too it goes by a percentage of what was made here or there and they kind of right in saying you should buy what you can from America since it puts food on our tables and not someone else's hey this has been going on many years and i mean old than me im 50 now but it stil hold true you buy something from another country you put some one out of a job here..If a company, like Toyota, is a company from another country its mostly made there and parts ship here to be put together and never wil be a American made car you want to feed another country and have them hire their poeple to build what you want or would you have your neighbor or your brother or sister working and feeding their family's i dont belong to uaw but what they saying is somewhat right when you buy something not made here your senting your money our money our lifes to another country and i think my family and my country more important way things are now its so hard to find something made here any more an done of the biggest problems of ours today corporate big wigs and our goverment is letting it happen when you can make something and ship it 1000's of miles by boat train and big truck cheaper than you could walk down street and pick it up something wrong

American cars are built by American companies like GM, Ford, and Chrysler.

Japanese cars are built by Japanese companies like Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Mazda (they are partially owned by Ford), Subaru, and Mitsubishi.

German cars are built by German companies like VW, Porsche, Mercedes, and BMW.

All of them are global companies that build cars in North America, Europe, and Asia. Except for Porsche who only builds cars in Europe.

The corporate headquarters are here in the States. Doesn't matter where the car is made, sad to say.

I will always look at Ford and GM first when buying a car.

That said, I usually wind up buying foreign. I won't put myself in a financial bind to buy a car that will die on me in a few years.

American made means it was designed by Americans.

It does not matter where it is made because it is made the same way using the same process and materials everywhere
