When can we consider this stray kitten to be "ours"?

3 days ago we nearly ran over a tiny kitten on our block. Our neighbor didn't know where he's from & I gave her our address in case anyone is looking for him. He had no ID, was covered with fleas & barely lets me out of his sight. We treated his fleas & if no-one claims him soon we'll take him to the vet for a check-up.

So... How soon can we ethically stop looking for his people and consider the little guy to be part of our family?

Covered with fleas, a kitten running into danger? He's yours as you saved his life. If he did have an owner, they should have taken better care of him. Thank you for rescuing this kitten. Give him a name, take him to the vet and make him a wonderful house cat who will never need to worry again.

I'd say after 2 weeks. I had found a kitten (or it found me?) and it was a siamese. For SURE, it had belonged to SOMEONE, so I posted signs at my mailbox, and FINALLY, after a WEEK, someone stopped by and asked, "You found a kitten? Was it a siamese?" Turns out it was their kitten, Jasmine! They thought it was dead, that the dogs or coyotes had to have gotten it, cuz it had gone missing for 2 weeks.

Now, we have strays come/go around here ALL the time. I have 2, and now 5 kittens to add! They are definitely feral and not human-friendly. But one of my other cats came to me as a stray, along with her brother. The brother was disruptive, but the "little girl" is a perfect addition, so she's been adopted.

Have you posted signs? Call the local radio station for their free "Lost & Found" ads? The newspapers?

It's tricky; he could be covered with fleas solely because he's been out and lost. If you want to be absolutely certain, you could put up "cat found" posters in your neighborhood and wait for a week or two. I'm actually rooting for you to be able to claim the cat, but just the fact that you're asking the question leads me to believe you need to do something to square it with yourselves. Take the cat to the vet regardless; if the cat actually belongs to someone else they should reimburse you. I hope he becomes yours.

I would say the kitten is yours it sounds like it was a stray if it was covered in fleas you do need to go to a vet as fleas cause tape worms so it will need worming and vaccinating against diseases. Thank you for saving it good luck

You can start to welcome him to your family after about 4 - 7 weeks.

You can still look after him at this time, Since hes only little and sounds like hes been abandon you can welcome him earlier.

I would advise to get the vet to check him out straight away even if your still trying to find his family.

He may need some treatments to the fleas, Some animals are allergic to them. Which can cause hair loss and death.

Also he may not have his injections if hes still only young he may haven't been given them, You should take him to the vet as soon as possible, Get him checked out : ).

I would recommend to keep him inside at all times, If you let him out and about he could catch some illness from the other strays.

    Hope i helped

have you feed the cat and took care of the cat, there is a general rule you should call the anamial shelter and give a discrpition of the cat if no one claims the cat in 30 days its yours, since you are taking care of the cat its yours.

He is yours - hope you give him a good name. He was both abandoned and neglected. Little kittens should not be out running around.

Somebody once said; "once an animal owner let's their animal run loose they surrender all rights to said animal".

I AGREE. It's your cat now.

2 thumbs down and 8 knuckles dragging. Percy must be in the house.
