Car problems, possible alternator?

hi... please help.

I've recently had my car serviced, she was running fine before. I picked her up, drove about 20 minutes and battery light came on and noticed a wering sound, the batter light went off and when i was stationary, the wering continued, with the lights and dash b lights diming and brightening with wering sound. Each time i get in the car it's fine for 5 minutes, then the wering sound and dimming and brightening start again, whilst driving and stationary. When stationary the revs jump from above 1,000 to below 1,000 and almost konks out, but doesn't.... my garage says it's when they cleaned the engine with water, and has mixed with oil... but I am not convinced as they say they fixed it and it still makes the wering revs and light fluctuations.

I've had a second opinion, it could be earth wire or alternator leads are not tight enough... I drive a 800mile trip on Wednesay and hope to have it fixed by then.

Please help...thanking you in advanced.

Check the alternator brushes, belt, and wiring loom. Try using a multimeter or voltmeter to check that you get 14 volts at the battery while the car is idling and a slightly higher voltage on a mid-range rev.

1/ check wire connections to alternator, distributor, battery etc .

make sure they are good and tight.Spray all connections with

C.R.C. to dispel moisture including inside distributor cap

2/ check tension of alternator drive belt.

3/ start engine and turn head lights full on,get someone to check

if headlights dim when you rev the motor.if they do you have

    a problem with alternator.

Please go through this sequence and don't use that garage again.
