Girl gamers getting more popular?

Ok, I am a 44 year old mother of two teenagers and I'm not ashamed to admit I play EQ2, and some of the xbox 360 games occasionally, including Rockband 2 every once in awhile - when I can get my son off the drums that is. I was online the other day and there was some chat about "girls don't play computer games" which I found totally ridiculous. My husband and I both play. It's fun relaxation and we both have a great time, but I don't always play when he's on. I thought that comment was totally off the mark and, well, stupid. I was wondering how many girl (female is the term I prefer) gamers there were, the more devoted the better.

I myself am a female gamer :). Good to see others out there.

I know what you mean! I hear the "girls don't play video games" comments a lot, but it is absurd. There are actually a lot of female gamers in my guild, and there has always been a lot in all the games I've played (EQ, EQ2, WoW, SWG, Warhammer, AoC, Vanguard........). The guys outnumber us by far, of course, but there are a lot girl gamers of all ages. In my current guild we've had female players ranging from 13 years old to 45.

I've played all sorts of games, but currently play WoW. I love to PvP on my Warrior and Death Knight. Sometimes I wonder what the guys would think if they knew they were being beaten by a girl hehe. I am main tank for a lot of our raids as well. :)

Last I heard, and I'm not including the girls that do it because their boyfriends do, the fairer sex only constituted about 10-15% of the gamers out there. While most can be considered "Casual" gamers, there are a fair number of Girls an Women whom game against the boys (and not just the Barbie and other "girly" games).

A couple years back, the Rainbow 6 championship went to an all-girls team!

As for the chat...that's along the same vein as "Girls can't do math or science" that we've heard aimed at girls from about grade 4 on for the last 50+ years.

As for Girls who Game being being Popular...only if she doesn't regularily wipe the floor with the boys...then she becomes distinctly "unpopular" with the boys. Well, most of them...then there are the ones like me that like a challenge. Just because I'm not good with Chess doesn't mean I won't play! I play because I like the game, and enjoy the companionship! (I do the same with Computer Games...)

    Just my 2% of a dollar. :D

I like your question btw hehe sounds like a bunch of 12 year old Jackholes not knowing what they are talking about. But its not just girls but everyone in general because with games like WOW and so many more since 2004 internet and computer gaming sales have almost increased by as much as 6x. In my own and kinda based on fact a bit opinion i would have to say that about 25% of gamers today are women but all in all that is an amazing leap since 2006 when only 3% of the pop was girls. All in all though i wouldn't stress about the general stupidity of people on the internet and just keep enjoying yourself online ^_^

I am a 42 year old mother of 4 and my whole family love playing video games. We all have our own genre of games that we like to play, so we have different systems and a wide variety of games. I have been gaming since the atari system came out, and was really into the first NES. Oh by the way, my daughter plays the games as well as my sons.

We've got a GH tournament at school in 2 weeks, and the major competition is/are female. I'm scared. But yeah, that's just people being stereotypical, like saying boys don't do ballet.
