Would you abort a baby that would be stillborn or disfigured if carried to term?
Abortion was brought up recently by one of my friends on MySpace. It had something to do with Obama and his position on the subject, but it made me think about the ones that are done not as a method of "birth control" but b/c of incest, rape, deformities or for babies that if carried to term and birthed would not have a very good quality of life due to all the medications or other medical treatments needed to sustain life.
A point was brought up about how these certain conditions can hinder the "survival of the fittest" and natural selection concepts.
How would you approach a situation like this?
I have read the first 12 responses and appreciate the honesty. Thank you.

when the heart of the baby stops beating, its a still born, no chance of survival, but in the window you can have a legal abortion, you won't know if your fetus will die
this is going to sound utterly mean and cruel, but look at "Idocracy" its not longer survival of the fittest, but by who can breed more. its getting scary
so yes, i think its a noble thing to end the possibility of a cruel life

I had to have an abortion when I was 16, I learned my lesson, I refused to be one of the people who "used it as birth control." I'm 20 now, married for 2 years and pregnant. I declined the testing for defects. I don't care if this baby is deformed, I would never do that again.

I am 8 weeks pregnant & my new OB(I moved to a new city, so I HAD to switch) suggested that I have amniocintisis done to see what sort of chances I had of my baby being Down's Syndrome(because I have a cousin who is). I asked him, well.. if I decided to do the test & we found out the the baby could have Down's Syndrome, are there extra things that I could do during pregnancy that could positively affect the health of my baby? He told me, no. So then I asked, what would be the point in this test then? He told me that some people "choose" to "terminate" their baby when they find out that they are likely to have it. Needless to say, I switched OBs very quickly! It doesn't matter to me if my baby comes out as blob with a pulse, I will love it unconditionally. Down's Syndrome wouldn't even be a bump in our road - a living, breathing baby is all that we're praying for!

No!
You can't tell if a child will be stillborn. And why would you kill a child if he/she would be disfigured?
I would not even abort my child if I was told there would be a 99% chance he would not live more than two weeks. People have been told that before and their children ended up being perfectly healthy with no medical complications at all.
Why just throw away your child because there is a chance something will be wrong with them? That only means there's a chance they'll be perfectly fine. And even if they have problems, why not even give them a chance to fight?

A pregnant lady cannot tell if she is carrying a stillborn baby...
My sister was pregnant for the whole 9 months like normal and 2 weeks before her due date she was told by the doctor her baby was dead (stillborn) so they took her straight to the OR and removed the baby, they took pictures and done hand n feet prints- she looks like as if my daughter just asleep, so peaceful not even completely blue!

There is absolutely no way of knowing your baby is going to be stillborn by the time you should have an abortion. I think the thought of an abortion is absolutely disgusting.

i was in the exact situation as 36weeks with evan, had an abortion at 19 and regretted it, i had my daughter at 21 and never got genetic testing etc because i knew it was a blessing and would be keeping my daughter no matter what
every womans situation is different, i wouldnt judge them

Of course you can tell if your baby is going to be stillborn...
If the Dr says "Your baby has no chance of survival outside of the womb" you can pretty much guarantee it will be stillborn.
I don't agree with the "survival of the fittest" stuff, but I am, and will always do what's best and what's right for my baby.
Riiggghhht, so your baby cant develop lungs. Yeah sure they'll be fine outside the womb! That's sarcasm.... Research before you thumb people down.

If you did genetic testing, and it confirmed a deformity that severely affected quality of life, then yes. I think to do otherwise would be cruel, especially in those first few months.
