Can LeBron be the "Golden Boy" playing for a small market team like Cleveland?

Ok so I just found out the Lakers-Rockets series drew the highest rating for ESPN ever for a NBA series, and it got me thinking why doesn't LeBron draw that type of ratings. On a individual basis he is more hyped up then any other player, but remember when they went to the Finals and it was like a record low ratings. I mean Lebron is gonna be the poster boy of the NBA and I am just wondering how much it pisses off Stern that he is playing for a small market with little media attention. imagine the ratings the NBA will get if LeBron plays for the Knicks or Lakers, by combining the hype of Lebron and the hype of the team and given the fact that basketball is a global sport more, the NBA might draw some epic ratings if that happens.

I am not hating here, but I am just wondering if it's good for the health of the NBA to have their biggest star struck in Cleveland.

BQ: Lakers or Denver?

BQ2: Melo or Wade?

BQ3: Are you pumped for the conference Finals?

STAR if you like STAR if you don't like!

Update:

yeah I am pumped other than Bos vs Bulls, the playoff hasn't lived up to expectations so far.

To the Spurs fan, game 4 between LAL vs HOU drew the biggest single game rating for ESPN, and that was their first game w/o Yao which nobody gave them any chance of winning, but people still tuned in to watch.

Update 2:

lol Warriors, yeah it's nicer to come on here at night.

Update 3:

You can still catch the score on your phone I guess, lol. Well good luck with you practice.

Update 4:

Cavs shouldn't Cleveland people sacrifice themselves for the good of the NBA, I mean do you really want to see the league do down because LeBron doesn't draw enough ratings to keep the league alive?

Update 5:

dude haven't you heard about the league lending out loans to teams and all the staff cut? Seriously a few Clevelanders and that can be solved or at least ease some financial difficulties for the NBA. Ok I hope this helps, you people are valuable for the first time in your lives, take that chance.

Update 6:

What happened to my best buddy who dreamt of helping the world? :(

Update 7:

What about the boy who is starving right now because his dad got fired at the concession stand in a NBA arena?

I don't think Lebron is yours to give up, I mean with all due respect I doubt he has ever heard of a boy named "Cavs in '09". I hope LeBron will do the right thing and walk away from Cleveland.

I don't agree, the Finals sucked because it was LeBron attempting and shooting a bunch of bricks and the Spurs sweeping. I didn't even want to watch the Finals that year, are you kidding?

LeBron's pretty big, I mean how much bigger can he get?

All I know, if he were to leave this city. It would be absolutely horrible. Cleveland would be heartbroken. Literally. It would be really really bad. That's why I can't see LeBron leaving. He couldn't do that to us.

I think a lot of people would lose respect for him if he bailed out on us for a bigger market and more money. Not just Cavs fans, but NBA fans.

Cleveland has one good thing. LeBron is literally the best thing that's ever happened to us, and everybody is trying to take him away...

    ....tear ;(

Edit: I never knew the NBA was having a crisis. They seem fine to me.

Edit: Shut up. He's mine, and the NBA can't have him!

Edit: Well, if giving up LeBron could solve world hunger, AIDS in Africa, and the genocides in Darfur, I would hand him over, but if LeBron's going to be used as a way to help make the NBA more money...no way! He's mine! MINE, MINE, MINE!

Edit: Dude, I think your overreacting to the "ratings" crap. Boston vs. Chicago Game 7 drew in record numbers. Boston vs. Orlando Game 7 drew in record numbers. The NBA is thriving right now, in the sense of popularity.

In fact: TNT's broadcast of Game 7 in the Magic-Celtics series was the most-watched second-round NBA playoff game in cable history and the highest-rated game of the 2009 NBA playoffs on broadcast or cable to date. The game was watched in 5,907,000 households and by 8,406,000 viewers. To date, the ratings for the NBA playoffs on TNT are up 8 percent over last year.

All this means is when the Cavaliers are in an intense series, everybody will watch.

It wouldn't be the right thing to leave Cleveland, and that's why he's not going anywhere.

  • It's possible that LeBron can put Cleveland on the map as far as ratings go, but that theory is not very probable. I think a major reason why LeBron is so hyped, whether he deserves the attention or not, is because his team does not draw in high ratings and he needs that extra push. I honestly don't see LeBron staying in Cleveland. He is a great player and if he chooses to be a Cavalier until he retires, I can see him achieving personal success as well as limited global success. But he leaves for New York, he will be a much bigger star and he'll achieve personal success as well as major global success.

I can't really say whether LeBron can be the "golden boy" staying in Cleveland because other factors need to be taken into account: if he gets a ring ratings might increase, plus we haven't experienced the full effect of his new MVP status because he received that award in the playoffs as a oppose to the regular season, this could affect over sales and ratings [online and on tv]. Also, in years to come the East will be more competitive and this can increase ratings as well. Lakers v/s Rockets series was a little shocking, akward and very very competitive. The same can't be said for the Cav's playoff games and this certainly didn't help the ratings they got. I guess the obvious answer is no but things can change depending on outside factors.

    BQ: Lakers in 6.

BQ2: for arguments sake, Melo because his team is in the playoffs. But Wade is a Beast.

    BQ3: eh.

edit: he's asking whether he'll be the golden boy for the NBA not for Cleveland. Wow you guys can't read... O_O

Agreed. If LeBron plays for a bigger franchise, the ratings in the NBA would go booming! I bet if LeBron is on a bigger franchise, people will watch more of the NBA than all those dramas (Grey's Anatomy, House, Prison Break, etc.) Then the NBA have better ratings than American Idol or maybe even the WWE. I heard that Monday Night Raw was more watched than a playoff game.

BQ1:Lakers in 5. Lakers win first two games. Lakers lose third game. Lakers win the next two games.

BQ2: Melo. Heck he lead his team to the conference finals. Not like Wade.

BQ3: YES!! Party at my house! 72 inch TV in one living room!

69 inch TV in another! Food from Burger King and PIzza Hut! Man, if you think this is crazy just watching the Conference Finals, you should look at me watching the Finals!

EDIT: I bet if the Lakers vs Cavs in the Finals, almost half of the ppl in the world whou be watching one game.

Well, you could do a lot worse than Cleveland, as Katherine Garnett found out in his time in Minnesota, but it is true that Bron is the media darling and he would probably draw even more attention in a larger city. But not New York, at least not yet- they are a rebuilding team and they aren't really ready to just so suddenly support LeBron.

BQ: Lakers in 6 or 7

    BQ2: Wade

BQ3: After watching the Warriors go 29-53, I wasn't pumped for the first two rounds, but now since the draft is soon, yeah, I am pumped.

Have all the trolls been tucked in by their mommies yet? I was being a little cautious earlier.

EDIT: Yeah, I don't have the time or the patience to deal with the trolls in the afternoon.

He already is the golden boy for Cleveland. If they win it this year, he's staying there until he is 30, at least. You can never say never about if he will go to larger markets like New York, LA, Chicago, Washington, etc., but Cleveland has its own character now since James came.

For some reason Lebron can't draw ratings! Most ppl wanted LA and Boston again !People outside of Cleveland don't care to watch Lebron. You need big time rating to be the golden boy so no he won't be.........
